Ambling Turtle — the cafe in East Coast for interesting Peranakan-inspired brunch.
There are tons of interesting themed cafes out there. But none of them are anything close to what Ambling Turtle offers.
Located at The Flow along East Coast Road, Ambling Turtle is a Peranakan-style cafe that puts a spin on modern cafe food.
Our honest review of Ambling Turtle
At first glance, Ambling Turtle intrigues with its interesting menu.
Take the classic grilled cheese for example. Also known as the Grilled Quatre Fromage ($14). It’s named after the use of four types of cheese here: cheddar, mozzarella, Emmental and mascarpone. Mascarpone is not commonly found in grilled cheeses, but the addition of it bestowed the grilled cheese with a creamy texture. Its light sweetness also added a good balance to the sandwich.
Nothing too crazy here. But you can also add on a portion of a Beef Rendang ($5), which was a great pairing with grilled cheese.

The Laksa Mac & Cheese ($15) also tied in with the Peranakan theme.

While the portion looks small, this was a dish which sharing is obligated. It’s cheesy, it’s spicy, it’s one of the most indulgent mac and cheeses I’ve had.
For a light snack, their Sliders ($3.5) comes with Prawn Mayo, Smokey Mushroom and Salmon Lox. You can also get all three for a discounted price of $9.
Asian-inspired artisanal tarts
Ambling Turtle also serves an array of Asian-influenced artisanal tarts such as Pulut Hitam ($7.5), Orh Nee ($8) and Ondeh Ondeh ($8.5).
The Pulut Hitam includes both elements from the traditional dessert — black glutinous rice and coconut mousse (instead of the usual coconut cream). It’s fragrant and light, and the tart shell was also buttery and crunchy.

For those who prefer to stick to the classics, their Valrhona Chocolate ($8) is also a crowd favourite.
