You know a legal drama is captivating when you feel the urge to rise on your feet and shout ‘objection, your honour!’ in the midst of the show. And then there are those with obvious loopholes and illogical plots that just leave you slumped on the couch with frustration. To save some of your time, we’ve compiled the 9 best legal dramas from TVB for you to binge this summer.

1. Legal Mavericks 踩過界

Although losing his vision in an accident in his childhood, Hope Man 文申俠 (played by Vincent Wong 王浩信) managed to qualify as a barrister through determination and perseverance. Despite visually impaired, his affinity as a lawyer and his acute sense beyond sight has earned him the title of ‘Blind Legal Knight’. Together with Deanie 趙正妹 (played by Sisley Choi 蔡思貝), his female legal executive with mob connections, and Gogo谷一夏 (played by Owen Cheung 張振朗), his flatmate and private detective, they aim to help the lower class fight for their rights through legal means. 

The first series in 2016 features Ali Lee 李佳芯 as a district court judge and Tracy Chu 朱千雪 as Hope Man’s ex-girlfriend from university. Meanwhile, the second series sees Kelly Cheung 张曦雯 as the protagonist’s competitive barrister and Paul Chun 秦沛 as Hope Man’s former master and Kelly Cheung’s master.

2. Ghetto Justice 怒火街頭

A life-changing incident in his career resulted in a change in attitude and work ethics for Law Lik Ah 羅力亞 (played by Kevin Cheng 鄭嘉穎). He used to practice law for fame and glory but had since devoted his life to helping the underprivileged, earning himself the status ‘Ghetto Lawyer’. Meanwhile, Wong Si Fu 王思苦 (played by Myolie Wu 胡杏兒), despises him for it and continues her method of crawling up the greasy pole. The series underscores the regretful truth that justice favors the upper echelon of society.

3. The Other Truth 真相

This 2011 TVB series revolves around ambiguous criminal and civil cases with disputable truths, highlighting the lawyers’ strive for impartiality and blind justice. The Other Truth stars Ruco Chan 陳展鵬, Raymond Wong Ho Yin 黃浩然, Tavia Yeung 楊怡 and Louis Yuen 阮兆祥, who are considered big stars now.

It received five top five nominations at the 2011 TVB Anniversary Awards, including Best Drama, Best Supporting Actress and My Favorite Male Character.

4. Forensic Heroes III 法证先锋III

While the Forensic Heroes series (there are four in total) leans more towards crime and investigation, Forensic Heroes III has a fair share of its time in the courtroom. Nancy Wu 胡定欣 stars as an ambitious barrister who defended criminals which disenchanted her spouse, who was a Senior Forensic Chemist played by Wayne Lai 黎耀祥. This series comprises a nice balance between the incendiary debates in the courtroom and mind-boggling investigations conducted by Forensic Chemists and District Crime Squad.

5. Raising The Bar 四個女仔三個BAR

Raising The Bar showcases the hardships of training of graduating into a full-fledged lawyer as the spotlight shines on trainees played by Grace Chan 陳凱琳, Jeannie Chan 陳瀅 and Louis Cheung 張繼聰 and more. More importantly, it highlights the moral conflicts as tricky cases forces the trainees between their personal beliefs with legal standards. How will they choose to deal their obstacles and how will it affect their relationship? 

6. Will Power 法外風雲

Will Power starts with a heated battle between renowned barristers Yu Ying Wai, Wilson (played by Wayne Lai 黎耀祥) and Lee Ming Yang, Morris (played by Moses Chan 陈豪). Wilson would stop at nothing to win the case which almost cost him his life. Ever since, he gained an insight and changed his attitude towards legal cases. Meanwhile. Morris continued down his path. A twist of fate causes them to reunite in court years later where they would unfold a bigger conspiracy, which their decision as a lawyer would cost someone’s life.

This TVB legal drama also stars Fala Chen 陳法拉, Christine Ng 伍詠薇 and Jason Chan 陈智燊.

7. Law dis-Order 律政強人

Heated debates on court is one thing, but there aren’t many legal dramas like Law dis-Order that draws the attention to the prevalent office politics of prestigious law firms. The series centers around the rivalry between KC Lai (played by Dick Liu Kai Chi 廖啟智) and Kent Cheung (played by Alex Fong) 方中信 as they use all means to strive for power.

Other actors include Raymond Cho 曹永廉, Mandy Wong 黄智雯, Florence Kwok 郭少芸and Matthew Ho 何广沛.

8. Survivor’s Law 律政新人王

As lawyer Homer Hong Dingwei (played by Lok Ying Kwan 骆应钧) had his license revoked for offending the court judge, he had no choice but to resort to recruiting fresh law graduates to revamp his firm. The 25-episode series stars Raymond Lam 林峯 who was previously sacked for his poor attitude, Sammul Chan 陈键锋 who decided to fight his cases independently instead of following a reputed lawyer around as a small fry, Myolie Wu 胡杏儿 who was ostracized at her former firm for her unwavering sense of justice and Bernice Liu 廖碧儿. As the show progresses, ambition, misunderstandings and a love triangle threatens to break the bond between them.

9. Friendly Fire 法網狙擊

By a twist of fate, Barrister JJ Kim Barrister JJ Kam (played by Michael Tse) and Director of Public Prosecutions Chris Fong (played by Tavia Yeung 楊怡) ended up in the same firm after breaking up due to a failed marriage proposal. Their different ideologies in handling cases and the interference of JJ’s secretary aggravates their already strained relationship. The court cases featured in this series is nothing much to shout about, but the presence of other major stars such as Vincent Wong 王浩信, Mandy Wong 黄智雯, Sharon Chan 陈敏之 and Samantha Ko 高海寧 gives Friendly Fire a spot on this list.
