If burgers had a class system, Carne would belong in the upper echelon. Born with a silver spoon, she was all sorts of posh you’d expect. She only carries 100% grass-fed beef while her wardrobe comprised of strictly 100% organic vegetables and natural seasonal fruits.

Carne is a chic burger joint at Telok Ayer, opened by renowned Italian-Argentine chef Mauro Colagreco.

Despite the distinct American diner layout, the monochromatic colour scheme exuded an aura of opulence and class.

In contrast to her spaciousness, Carne’s menu was limited to a small selection of burgers.

Classic Burger at Carne with grass-fed burger, lettuce, murican cheese, butter bun

The Classic Burger ($19.5), as the name suggests, is a classic. It was built with butter bun, natural grass-fed beef patty, local oak lettuce, organic tomato and red onion. It’s a textbook burger. Decent, satisfactory even, but it lacked finesse.

Beef and Chimichurri Burger at CARNE Singapore- signature chimichurri, pickled jalepnos, organic red onion, local arugula, natural cheese

Meanwhile, Carne’s Beef and Chimichurri Burger ($24) embodied said finesse. The spicy senorita was dressed in a veil of chimichurri and accessorised with tangy pickled jalapenos and locally sourced arugula. Arugula instead of lettuce was a great complement to the burger. However, I didn’t spend an extra $4.5 for a miserable teaspoon worth of chimichurri.

Her version of fries is wedges topped with crispy bacon and cream cheese. Our table had a heated debate on the cream cheese. It was an unfamiliar combination, but I thought its richness against the savoury bacon bits created a more vibrant dynamic. Regardless, our general consensus was that $10 was a hefty price to pay for a small bowl of barely crispy wedges.

The steeper price is likely a result of ‘opulent’ ingredients like organic red onion, artisanal cheese, local arugula and organic greek yoghurt dressing. Carne is the burger joint for sustainability and organic foods. The burgers were great. But it’s not her fault, it’s mine. Elegance, class, intellect, beauty… she had them all. I just don’t have the capacity to maintain her lavish lifestyle.
