Food menu at Flame & Fern cafe in JB

If you’ve ever scrolled through Google Maps searching for your next cafe hop, chances are you’ve come across Flame & Fern, the industrial-themed cafe in JB with over 3,000 five-star reviews.

Naturally, we had to see what the hype was all about.

First impression

The ambience hits the sweet spot between cosy and stylish, with plenty of lush greenery softening the industrial tones. You can choose to sit indoors where you’ll catch the chefs in action at the open-fire grill, or head outside for a breezier vibe (although we’d recommend insect repellants for this).

There’s even a secret garden tucked downstairs if you’re in the mood for a little romantic stroll. And don’t forget to snap a few shots at the Instagrammable corners near the entrance before you leave.

What we tried

We tried a good mix of dishes that afternoon, but here are some of the standouts:

Lamb Shakshuka at Flame & Fern

The Lamb Chorizo Shakshuka (RM 35) was a comfort on a plate. The lamb wasn’t too gamey, the sauce had just the right tang, and that glorious cheese pull with toast was too enticing.

On the other hand, the Burnt Caesar Salad (RM 29) didn’t look like much compared to the other dishes on the table, but this one surprised us the most. Perfectly seasoned, the kind of salad you’d actually enjoy on a healthy day.

Barrramundi Tacos at Flame & Fern

The Barramundi Taco (RM 36) came with super fresh, juicy fish and a nice crispy bite. Light, tasty, and perfect for sharing with friends.

Their menu is impressively varied, covering everything from pastas to hearty meat dishes, plus brunch options like avo-tomato with poached eggs. If you’re here just for drinks and desserts, the Coconut Latte (RM 18) and Mango Butter Cream (RM 19) are worth ordering for both taste and aesthetics. The Elderflower with white peach was a tad too sweet for us, but maybe it’s more of a kid-pleaser.

Basque Burnt Cheesecake at Flame & Fern JB Cafe

Now, let’s talk about the star of the show, the Burnt Caramel Cheesecake (RM 18).

Creamy, rich, and just the right balance of sweetness without the caramelised layer overpowering. Honestly, we took a second bite before even finishing our mains. It’s that good.

Beyond a cafe…

Aside from dining, Flame & Fern occasionally hosts events.

So if you’re looking for something interesting to do in JB, coming up on 23 November (4–6pm) is a ceramic painting workshop.

Prices are RM 100 for members and RM 120 for non-members, which is honestly not a bad way to spend an afternoon if you’re already in JB.
