Maybe you don’t actually need to go to a karaoke bar anymore.
I love karaoke, but I have to admit that going to a karaoke place can sometimes feel like a whole event in itself. You have to get everyone to agree on a date, find somewhere convenient, book a room, travel there and then make sure everyone actually turns up.
So when I tried the JBL EasySing Mic Mini with the JBL Go 5, I started wondering if we’ve been making karaoke more complicated than it needs to be.
Small enough to bring anywhere

The JBL Go 5 speaker is small and portable enough that you don’t have to think twice about throwing it into a bag before heading out. Despite its compact size, JBL says the Go 5 is designed to deliver clear details and deep bass.
That makes quite a bit of difference when you’re using it for something like this because I don’t think most people are going to buy a small portable speaker purely for karaoke. You’d probably use it for your everyday music, bring it along for picnics or gatherings, and then when someone decides they want to sing, you simply pair it with the mic and suddenly you have a karaoke setup.
For me, that’s much more appealing than buying something that only comes out when you’re specifically having a karaoke night.
What makes it so special?
The JBL EasySing Mic Mini is, as its name suggests, pretty tiny. The microphone weighs just 37g and comes with a wireless dongle and charging case, so it’s another one of those things that you can easily keep in your bag. You can also attach the Mic Mini to a handle to extend its length, which makes it easier and more comfortable to hold while singing.
One feature I particularly like is the AI Vocal Removal, which allows you to reduce the original vocals from a song so you can use the instrumental track as your karaoke backing track. You can adjust how much of the original vocal you want to remove, which is actually quite useful because there are definitely songs where I need the original singer to guide me through at least half of it.

There are also features such as high-pitch boost and natural reverb, which give you a little more control over how your voice sounds. I wouldn’t say this is going to magically turn anyone into a professional singer, but the reverb certainly helps when you’re standing there holding a microphone and suddenly feeling much more confident than you should be.
It’s not just for singing
Another reason I think the combination works is that the Go 5 isn’t a one-purpose karaoke speaker. Once the karaoke session is over, you can continue using it as a regular portable Bluetooth speaker.

The EasySing Mic Mini can also be used for other things such as livestreaming, podcasting and voiceovers.
Is it worth it?
I wouldn’t say this means you can completely replace karaoke bars, especially if you’re planning a proper karaoke night with a big group. There’s still something different about having a private room, a big screen with all the lyrics and everyone shouting over each other while trying to decide what song to play next.
But if what you really want is the ability to sing with your friends whenever you feel like it, the JBL EasySing Mic Mini and Go 5 make a pretty convincing case for bringing karaoke with you instead.
