Kyuukei Coffee review – Unpretentious coffee house at KADA

Filter Coffee at Kyuukei Coffee KADA

Take a break…

But not with a KitKat, but at Kyuukei Coffee, a speciality coffee shop at KADA.

Kyuukei translates to “break” in Japanese, and that’s exactly what the founder of the cafe, Jonathan Teo, aimed for — for busy city people to slow down and enjoy a cuppa joe.

Heading to KADA? Here’s a breakdown of all of their cafes and restaurants

First impression?

Ambience at Kyuukei Coffee KADA

Unpretentious. Loved the raw finishing, which gives off the impression that you’re getting coffee in an abandoned warehouse, or basement.

In comparison to their first outlet at Alexandra, which had warmer tones and a more Japanese-zen vibe, Kyuukei Coffee KADA bears a more industrial vibe.

But what about the coffee?

Expect a wide variety of single origin and blends at Kyuukei Coffee.

If you’re spoilt for choice like I was — they have 11 options to choose from, with prices ranging from $8 to $20 — just ask Jonathan, or any of the friendly staff at the cafe.

Personally, I’d be quite hesitant to spend that much on coffee if I’m not confident in the barista, but I felt like I was in good hands with this team.

What’s there to eat?

Pair your coffee with one of their sweet or savoury toasts.

The Brisket Pesto ($22) is apparently really popular. They were all out of it during my visit.

Jam Packed Thick Toast

But, I got the chance to try their Jam-packed Thick Toast ($4.5). As unassuming as it looked, it uses the best of the best ingredients, which is required when the assembly is so simple. The homemade ricotta was light and fluffy, while the jam, hailing all the way from South Canterbury, had a good mix of sweetness and tartness.

Overall, a great option for a light afternoon snack.
