Garlic Ragu Fettucine - fettuccine, ragu, braised beef, whipped cream, fried garlic

Mad For Garlic is either the perfect refuge in a vampire apocalypse or a haven for those with an unhealthy obsession for garlic. One of the tips for beginner cooks is to use more garlic than the recipe calls for and this garlic-speciality restaurant at Suntec City takes that tip to the next level.

While the restaurant is garlic-themed, Mad For Garlic has quite an extensive menu that includes bread, starters, soup, pasta, rice and steak.

We started our meal with their Dracula Killer ($18)– garlic, anchovy and grated Grana Padano served with sliced baguettes. Amidst the potent waves of garlic and touch of salt, laid disappointment.

For starters, the baguettes were barely toasted. Nothing kills the mood more than limp bread. The dish itself was also pretty underwhelming for $18. While the roasted garlic with cheese was an enjoyable combination- not that you can go wrong with these two ingredients- it seemed a little overpriced. I don’t want to be a degenerate who questions restaurant prices but this honestly felt like an unreasonable mark-up.

While it was tempting to settle for Aglio Olio, I took Mad For Garlic’s recommendation and ordered their bestseller- Garlic Ragu Fettucine ($26).

The beef ragu sauce embodied time itself, exemplifying deep meaty flavours. One bite in and I instantly understood why it was such a popular dish. The sauce itself was world-star.

Once I was convinced the dish couldn’t get any better, I stirred in the dollop of whipped cream, an unconventional ingredient in a traditional pasta dish. The touch of decadence and creaminess it added to the sauce was just pure bliss!

We also got the Dancing Salsa Rice with Beef ($25) which is also available with Chicken and Pork for $23.

It was a decent dish, with nothing that stands out besides the fact that the tender slices of beef. The hotplate also bestowed a smoky and crispy layer on the edges of the rice.

While the fettucine was impressive, the overall experience did not warrant a second visit. Despite so, the images of their steak has been calling out to me, so who knows? I might return after all.
