[REVIEW] MILKLAB – Popular milk brand launches oat milk

MILKLAB oat milk

As sustainable food gains popularity in the market, MILKLAB, a popular Australian milk brand, has recently added Oat Milk to its repertoire.

“Our Oat Milk comprises of 10% oats while the leading competitor has around 8%,” Unice Tan, Southeast Asia and Middle East Regional Brand Manager confidently answered when we asked how MILKLAB plans to compete with the market leaders.

2% may be a small number but it makes a huge difference to the flavour and mouthfeel. I was convinced with just a sip as the rich and creamy oat milk, like no other, slid down my throat. There’s no added sugar but the high concentrate of oats resulted in a malty sweetness that complemented the bitterness of espresso.

It’s also designed to be barista-friendly, ensuring that the milk stretches well and performs like dairy when frothed. True enough, the latte art did last longer than usual.

A blind taste test also indicated that the participants preferred MILKLAB’s Oat Milk to the market leader.

If you thought 10% was impressive, you’d be blown away by their Almond Milk with 40% more almonds than the leading competitor. Unfortunately, we didn’t get the opportunity to sample it, but it’s voted the Best Almond Milk in Australia.

MILKLAB’s repertoire also includes Dairy, Soy, Coconut, Macadamia and Lactose-free Milk.

I’m not usually a fan of soy milk’s sharp and funky flavour but I found MILKLAB’s variation a lot more palatable. It’s also worth mentioning that it’s lower in sugar than the leading competitor and 15% higher in protein than regular dairy, for anyone who’s monitoring their nutrients intake.

On top of that, MILKLAB dabbles in recipe R&D in collaboration with Monin, a gourmet-flavoured syrup brand.

The Oriental Cream featured lychee, osmanthus, cheesecake cream topping and oat milk. The lychee wasn’t as prominent compared to the earthiness of the osmanthus but it adds a touch of brightness to flavour profile, counteracting the richness of the cheese foam.

Meanwhile, for a lighter option on the palate, opt for their Violet Bandung which utilizes their refreshing coconut milk option that’s sweetened with rose-syrup.

Lastly, the Lychee Rose Latte with oat milk resembled bandung and it was a little too sweet for our liking.
