Might be one of the best bagels in Singapore
Wooly’s cafe has been the talk of the town when bagels are mentioned. While halal bagels are a great addition to Singapore’s cafe scene, I think it’s about time we divert our attention back to an underrated spot for bagels — Onalu.
Sorry SMU students, we’re not gatekeeping this.
Our honest review of Onalu Bagel Haus
Onalu Bagel Haus is inspired by founder Jeremiah’s trip to New York where he saw and ate countless bagels from mom & pop shops to bakeries and cafes. Realising the shortage of bagel houses in Singapore coupled with the desire to bring a piece of New York back, he teamed up with 4 others and opened Onalu.
You’ll notice that the bagels are slightly chewier and softer than most variations in Singapore, but that’s just how New York style bagels are done.
What we got at Onalu
The most memorable of them all, the Deviled Spam ($9), was a levelled up egg mayo with spam. Think Korio’s (rest in peace) Breakfast Sammy, but swap the brioche for the bagel, and egg mayo for a sinful version that was spicier and earthier. The eggs were also more finely smashed resulting in a thick sauce-like consistency.

Next, for those who are already missing McGriddles, you’re in luck. The Big Breakfast ($16) shared the McGriddle’s syrup on egg combination and the flavours were almost uncanny. It’s a thicc boi, stuffed with bacon, honey-baked ham, scrambled eggs, hash brown and melty cheese for that basic cheese pull shot. Although it was slightly skewered towards the syrup, there was still a decent balance between sweet and savoury.

For a more lunch vibe kinda bagel, get the Bulgogi Beef ($12) that featured a generous amount of bulgogi beef. The meat was juicy and tender and the bulgogi sauce gets progressively spicier as you eat. The accompaniment of Korean slaw and sunny side up might’ve helped curb the heat but it’s probably still too spicy for those who have lower spice tolerance.

Lastly, the Plain Jane ($7) was the most generic one of all, as suggested by its name. Monterey Jack, cheddar and scrambled eggs. We added onion jam for $1 to spice it up (still basic though). While it did add a layer of sweetness, the onions weren’t cooked down enough to a jammy consistency.

Verdict
Overall, a good meal at an affordable price.
