Power Coffeehouse was the imagery of Singaporeans with Valley Girl accents. Essentially, it’s a Singaporean breakfast place that’s been white-washed. While I invariably cringe when I come across videos plagued by fake accents, the westernization of traditional Singaporean breakfast was something that I could get by.
At this point, I should point out that Power Coffeehouse’s menu remains largely Asian with the likes of Nasi Lemak (S$6.5) and Traditional Popiah (S$2.5). The only western influence was found in their Power Toast Set that comes with the option of Almond Kaya with Maple Drizzle and their artisanal coffee series, which is what we got with Burpple Beyond’s 1-for-1.
In all, we paid S$5.8 (and more for drinks) for the Almond Kaya Toast with a side of sous vide eggs.
There’s no point hiding the fact that it’s an expensive breakfast, even more so than YY Kafei Dian’s cloud-like variation, and definitely more so than the OGs at Ya Kun or your everyday hawker centre stalls. But I have to admit, it’s worth the price.

The toast bore no resistance under the minimal force of stainless steel. The crust film crackled and the body ripped apart. No mercy was given as I shoved the bite-sized piece in my mouth. The ambrosial fragrance of pandan and honey mingled on my tongue before the sliced almonds crumbled in my mouth. It was, albeit overpriced, a damn good piece of toast.

Next, the second point of the trifecta for the perfect Singaporean breakfast, soft-boiled eggs. I’m not sure if it’s the type of eggs they use or the fact that they went through the trouble of cooking them in sous vide, but I swear the eggs had a layer of glaze, akin to a freshly-polished pair of boots. The taste remained as it should be though. Eggs are just eggs after all.

The only thing that irked me was the Kopi Latte and Teh Latte (S$3.5 for hot, S$4 for iced). The former was devoid of coffee, no less than coffee-flavoured milk. Meanwhile, the teh latte was saccharine. Perhaps the espresso-based drinks from their Artisan Series, essentially ‘western coffee’, would fare better. But this was an abomination. A failed experiment.
