[REVIEW] Seng Coffee Bar’s Asian-inspired dishes in the east

Based in the East, Seng Coffee Bar is a modern coffee bar with a splash of locality, serving a variety of South East Asian-inspired dishes atop a comforting cup of joe.

You’ll be spoilt for choice, with classics like the Small Breakfast ($8) which comprises toasted sourdough, grilled vine tomatoes and a choice of egg, and seasonal specials like their Ngoh Hiang Pork Burger ($14) and Uni Cream Pasta ($32).

Breakfast till 5pm

The Crab Meat Egg Benedict ($18), adorned with ikura (fish roe), stood out with its Japanese elements. Instead of the typical prosciutto or smoked salmon, the dish featured a generous portion of crab cake.

Resembling the ocean, its refreshment was underscored by their signature hollandaise sauce that bore a razor-sharp tang. In contrast, the richness from the perfectly poached egg and bubbles of ikura rounded the tart elements, resulting in a more balanced dish.

It was almost a perfect dish had the English muffin not been over-toasted.

In the same vein, the main dishes reflect a mishmash of culture, such as the Squid Ink Risotto ($20)– a chef’s recommendation- that witnesses the invasion of ikura and Japanese puff rice in an Italian dish.

While those were intriguing, we stuck with familiar flavours.

The Salted Egg Chicken Cutlet ($16) was a bang for your buck, with a massive cutlet that sprawled across the plate. This was easily the size of my face.

The cutlet was tender and lightly fried for a veil of crisp.

As much as I loved a decadent sauce, the portion it came in made it a struggle to finish. The sauce by itself was bearable though. It was less punchy than other salted egg variations out there. But paired with an oily and massive cutlet, finishing it was a herculean task.

Balanced cup of coffee

Espresso-based coffee starts from $3.5 for a shot of Espresso, $5 for a White and $5 for a Black.

The Hot White was adorned with an exquisitely-designed seahorse latte art. Appealing to the eyes, but its taste fell short of expectations, with a generic flavour profile that was catered more towards the masses.

Perhaps their Cold Brew would have more distinct undertones, with their Secret White ($7) resembling a bite of Fererro Rocher and the Secret Hulk ($8) featuring an coalescence of houjicha, honey and oat milk.

Verdict

With such intriguing dishes, it’s hard to resist the temptation to return to Seng Coffee Bar.
