Digital locks are a necessity. It’s convenient, it’s safer, and it’s a good long-term investment. Convenience with Fingerprint Sensor
Going into the house has never been more convenient with the Holztür. The digital lock I was using before this didn’t have a fingerprint sensor unlike this. Also, you had to activate the lock by touching the surface before you could key in your pin or use the RFID Card, which causes an inevitable delay. Meanwhile, the Holztür allows you to enter your password instantly. Furthermore, with a Semiconductor Fingerprint Sensor, entering the house literally takes no more than a second.
The fingerprint sensor has been doing pretty well so far. It’s a 90% success rate and I would honestly 10% is due to the poor positioning of our fat fingers. I also love how easy the registration process was since everything could be easily done on the phone, which I will cover more later. But, for anyone who’s wondering, it stores up to 100 fingerprints. So, get crazy, put in all 10 fingerprints of your entire family, maybe even throw in an elbow print (I tried and it didn’t work).
For those who are still using the anachronistic key and lock, do I really have to say more? Having to fumble for your keys at your doorstep, being locked out of the house whenever you forget to bring the key out, the constant fear of misplacing your key… None of this will exist if you had a digital lock. People say Tesla’s a good long-term investment. But I think digital locks is the real star here.
Bluetooth Gateway – Unlock From Your Phone
I had a huge culture shock when the serviceman from Starke asked me to download an app to manage the lock. An app for a digital lock? My mind was actually a little bit blown. But in hindsight, it is 2021 so I really shouldn’t have been surprised. The first thing that caught my eye was the big lock button on the screen, which indicates that I could access the lock with my phone. But, while it is quite a cool feature, it’s actually not practical at all as you have to be within 2 meters of the lock for it to work. By then, I would’ve just used my fingerprint.
As mentioned above, the password generation and fingerprint and IC Cards registration are all done on your phone, which is a lot easier to do compared to the old lock I had from 7 years ago.
Different types of passwords
Besides your regular passwords, you can also set up the following types: Timed, One-time and recurring. Timed passwords are bound by a time period, one-time passwords can only be used once, and Recurring means that the password can only be used at a specific time every week. For example, the passcode can only be valid on Saturday from 12pm to 1pm. Personally, the one-time password is a great addition to the lock. You can just set an easy passcode like 1234 if you have friends coming over so that they can just let themselves in. It’s a convenient something that doesn’t compromise on safety.
Other functions
You can slide the metal plate off the Holtzür if your lock turns faulty or runs out of battery which reveals a keyhole to manually unlock your door. Starke Digital Locks provides 3 master keys. I know, it is counter-intuitive to carry a key out if you own a digital lock which is why it’s also built with a USB-C point which allows you to charge it with a portable charger from the outside.

- Auto-locking time setting function
Things to note:
Remember to double-check with the lock installer that the new lock you’re getting is the same size as the one you already own (only applicable to digital lock users). If you chose one that’s a smaller size, it’ll result in a hole in your door. The lock installer will patch it up for you, but it won’t look like the rest of your door. If there is an issue with the lock you chose, more lock options will be provided to you.
