Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Boulevard returns to the stage in a lavish new production, led by musical theatre icon and international recording superstar Sarah Brightman.
Based on the classic 1950 film of the same name, the musical brings to life the haunting tale of Norma Desmond, a faded silent film star desperate to reclaim the spotlight. With its sweeping score, cinematic storytelling, and an unforgettable lead performance, this latest production reimagines the Hollywood noir masterpiece for a new generation of theatergoers.
A haunting tale of fame and obsession
To be honest, attending Sunset Boulevard without prior knowledge of its plot was a thrilling experience. The narrative, centered on the tragic tale of Norma Desmond — a former silent film star yearning for a return to the big screen — was surprisingly riveting. The plot twists kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time.
I also loved the production’s design elements, specifically Desmond’s mansion, which was brought to life with intricate details. The innovative use of a translucent screen and lighting effects also created depth on stage, enhancing the overall visual experience.
Musically, the show masterfully alternated between lively Hollywood jazz numbers and Norma’s poignant monologues — her operatic delivery was both technically impressive and emotionally evocative. This interplay not only sets the scene, but also underscored the tension between the glamorous yet cutthroat nature of showbiz and the personal struggles of staying true to oneself.

Spoiler alert! The climax of the musical unfolds when Norma Desmond shoots Joe Gillis, the screenwriter, in the back as he attempts to leave. With Gillis already offstage, the tense silence that followed was impactful, as we anxiously await the confirmation of his fate.
