The queues for Sushi Zushi snakes out of Funan, and here’s why.
Sushi Zushi is a newly opened “omakase” at Funan offers freshly kneaded nigiri sushi from an affordable price of $3.5.
This isn’t omakase though
And you’re right.
The only reason why we would compare Sushi Zushi to an omakase is because we believe that the main value of modern omakase lie within the freshly made nigiri sushi, rather than the surprise element of “leaving it all up to the chef”.
There’s a new $19.9 omakase spot in town: check it out!
At this new Japanese restaurant, you’re allowed to order nigiri sushi a la carte, and the best part is, the chef makes it fresh to order. This means that the temperature and the texture will be just right.

How was the food at Sushi Zushi?
It’s all you ever wanted in a nigiri sushi. The rice is compact enough to hold together when picked up, yet delicate enough to melt in your mouth as soon as you take a bite.
The fish was also fresh. But that’s a given considering they import their seafood from Toyosu Market, Japan, four times a week. That’s almost as much, or even more, than the most omakase restaurants in Singapore.
To no one’s surprise, the Otoro Nigiri Sushi ($12) was one of our favourites. It’s nice and fatty. The Scallops ($8) and Swordfish Sashimi ($3) was also great.
What was surprising for us was actually the Aburi Spicy Salmon ($4.5), with a spicy house-made mayonnaise that packed a punch.
What else is on the menu?

Sushi Zushi’s comprehensive menu includes sashimi, gunkan, handrolls, makimono, dessert and drinks.
If you’re on a budget, you can also consider ordering one of their sets, such as the Shiromi Set ($15) which comes with five pieces of white fish nigiri sushi. I think it’s quite value-for-money.
Meanwhile, if you’re looking for recommendations, these are what we absolutely loved on the menu:
So should I queue?
We’re not sure how long the queue is exactly, but we’re estimating at least an hour? Considering this is the only Japanese restaurant in Singapore that offers this concept, it’s probably worth queuing for if you have the time.
