Instagrammable cafe Wheeler's Yard with two bikes in front of their door

Is Wheeler’s Yard closed?

Unfortunately, this aesthetic bicycle-themed cafe in Balestier is permanently closed as of 2024. However, if you’re still interested in how this cafe fared, here’s our honest review of Wheeler’s Yard back in 2019.

Is Wheeler’s Yard worth the hype?

What do you get when you cross a bicycle shop and a cafe? You get Wheeler’s Yard! This rustic bicycle-themed cafe at Balestier is housed within an spacious industrial warehouse, serving a fine selection of coffee and Asian-fusion dishes.

Do note that Wheeler’s Yard was initially established with a bicycle shop behind the cafe but they have unfortunately closed it down last year.

Asian-fusion dishes

Wheeler Yard’s menu includes the classic Eggs Benedict ($17.9) and Simply Granola ($12.9) but I was drawn to their Japanese and American fusion breakfast such as the Pork Katsu Toast.

The Pork Katsu Toast ($19.9) was tender with a nice coating of crisp. It’s complemented with pork floss and seaweed, and a slight drizzle of an umami tonkatsu sauce.

Meanwhile, the Porky Bowl ($17.9) was essentially an oyaku don served with bacon instead of chicken. I absolutely loved their sauce; very umami but not overpowering. The bacon used was also lightly cured and its tenderness almost tricked

Lastly, the Chili Crab Pasta ($18.9), while seemingly worth it with a chunk of soft-shell crab, had an overly oily sauce that lacked depth. The ones from Menage Cafe and A Beautiful Day fared so much better.

The Iced Espresso Ball (S$8.5) is an amazing choice if you need a sustainable drink to loiter in the cafe the entire day. Not bad, with traces of caramel and hazelnut embedded in the coffee.

Our verdict?

I’ll be honest here. Their bestseller is the aesthetics of the cafe, with its industrial designs and chic ambience.
