Bubble Anime Movie (2022) Poster

There is no end to the list of highly anticipated anime movies in 2022. Jujutsu Kaisen has released their first movie while One Piece Film: Red is set to be released in August. Film fanatics are also looking forward to original works such as Suzume no Tojimari- created by Makoto Shinkai, the man behind Your Name. The list simply goes on.

Not all works receive the same amount of attention. Today we will be revealing one of more overshadowed anime movies of 2022- Bubble.

The trailer doesn’t give away much, besides a post-apocalyptic Tokyo, teens parkouring around the city, and well… lots of bubbles.

The laws of gravity have been broken and bubbles, which you can bounce off, have rained down upon the dystopia. Being isolated from the rest of the world, Tokyo is now a playground and a new battlefield for parkour team battles.

Hibiki, the protagonist of Bubble (2022)

Hibiki, a young ace with a dangerous play-style, is saved by a mysterious girl with mysterious powers. Drawn to each other in this world with its broken gravity, how will their encounter lead to a revelation that will change the world?

Wit Studio, the animation studio behind Attack on Titans

While Bubble may not part of a larger series such as One Piece or Jujutsu Kaisen, the crew behind it is nothing to be scoffed at.

Bubble is directed by Tetsurō Araki, the director for three seasons of Attack on Titan. He also helmed Death Note (2006-2007), Highschool of the Dead (2010), Guilty Crown (2011-2012), and Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress (2016).

Araki is joined by Japanese animation’s biggest names.

Bubble is written by Gen Urobuchi, a novelist and screenwriter who is responsible for works Fate/Zero, Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Psycho-Pass, among many others.

Meanwhile, Takeshi Obata takes the role of illustrator. Obata was previously in charge of illustrating Death Note and Bakuman, and has also mentored several well-known artists.

The animation studio that is making all of this happen is none other than Wit Studio.

Wit Studio is known for their epic animated action scenes. Founded by producers of Production I.G to allow for greater creative freedom and faster production processes, Wit Studio quickly gained notability from producing the first three seasons of Attack on Titan, as well as other successful original works such as Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress (2016) and Great Pretender (2020).

In addition, mangas that they have adapted include:

  • Attack on Titan (2013-2019)
  • Seraph of the End (2015)
  • The Ancient Magus’ Bride (2017-2018)
  • Vinland Saga (2019)
  • Spy x Family (2022)

Where can you watch it?

This new anime film will be featured first in an early screening at the Berlin International Film Festival in February 2022. It will then be released worldwide on Netflix on April 28, 2022, before airing theatrically in Japan in May.

With such a star-studded team behind the creation of Bubble, it truly is a shame that it is not mentioned more often. Looks like Bubble is making a strong case for itself to being one of the most overshadowed anime movies of 2022.
