A new study commissioned by JustCo, Asia’s leading flexible workspace provider, and conducted by Milieu Insight, reveals that more than half of respondents consider employee productivity and well-being among their top five priorities.

One in three SMEs cite a lack of wellness facilities as a current workspace challenge.

The importance of promoting positive mental states in the workplace cannot be overstated. Approximately one-third of employees face challenges due to a lack of wellness facilities, space constraints, and insufficient networking opportunities. In a previous survey, nearly half of Singaporean employees reported feeling burnout from work at least a few times a month, underscoring the need to prioritise mental health.

Popular wellness amenities that can boost employee well-being include well-stocked pantries (47%) and nap rooms or relaxation areas (37%). Ergonomic office furnishings (59%) also play a significant role in creating a comfortable and productive work environment.

While wellness amenities are crucial, factors like office location (80%) and strong technology infrastructure (55%) are considered even more important. These elements impact commute times and the ability to perform tasks efficiently, contributing significantly to overall employee satisfaction.

Nearly three-quarters of SME employees prefer workspaces described as “welcoming,” “vibrant,” or “collaborative,” indicating a strong preference for environments that promote positive mental well-being. Traditional or premium office settings are less favored, highlighting a shift towards more dynamic and supportive workspaces.

Embracing flexible work arrangements

The future of work is increasingly flexible, with many Singaporean SMEs adopting hybrid work arrangements. The study found that 32% of SME employees already work mostly remotely or have the option to do so, a trend expected to grow following recent policy announcements supporting flexible working arrangements.

Flexible workspaces not only need to cater to employees’ well-being but also foster collaboration and community-building. Many employees desire workspaces that offer both flexibility and support for communal activities. Specifically, 58% of respondents want offices that are adaptable, while 37% value a strong focus on community.

Challenges and considerations for SMEs

Despite a preference for well-being and community-focused workspaces, practical considerations like space flexibility and budget constraints often take precedence. More than half of decision-makers cite the lack of affordable options in desired locations as a significant challenge. Additionally, 41% find that current workspaces lack the necessary flexibility to adapt to changing needs, and long-term rental commitments (44%) pose difficulties in uncertain economic times.
