When you first think of serviced apartments, you’d probably envision long-term stays, predictable and uninspiring interiors — a place to merely rest. Typically, it caters to travellers on extended journeys, usually driven by work commitments. In comparison, hotels tend to dazzle with opulence and comfort, offering an abundance of lavish decor. But amidst all that grandeur, it can be challenging to capture the feeling of being at home.

Those were some concerns that I had while I was planning a two-night staycation. My girlfriend was about to embark on a five-month journey away from Singapore, and we wanted a few precious days together. Like many young Singaporean couples, we do not have our own space. While a conventional hotel staycation could have sufficed, we craved something more — an extra layer of intimacy and privacy.

Enter Dao by Dorsett AMTD’s Aparthotel Hybrid Model — a warm embrace that offered the comfort of a living room, the convenience of a fully-equipped kitchen, and a bed with an amazing view. Dao blended the best of both worlds, combining the cosiness of home with the opulence of a luxury hotel room.

One-bedroom Premier Suite

First thoughts: the view. Now, it might not be your quintessential “unobstructed unparalleled sea view.” Sure, you’ll spot some commercial buildings on the horizon. But here’s the catch – we’re in Tanjong Pagar, and for the sheer convenience of this location, the view is nothing short of remarkable.

The room greeted us with an open kitchen, fully equipped and ready for action (spoiler: we cooked a meal). There was a dining table, a sprawling sofa that practically whispered “relax,” a sleek coffee table, and a wide-screen television.

Venture further into the room, and you’re met with the pièce de résistance — a king-size bed that shares the same breathtaking sea view. And then, a pleasant surprise: even the toilet boasts a sea view!

Now, while the view was nothing short of insane, and the room was spacious and incredibly comfy, it’s fair to say that it was a bit… monotonous. A tad too grey for our taste. But here’s the beauty of it. You can easily add a breath of life into your room.

Dao’s adopt-a-plant program

Roy & Matthias, the father-and-son plant duo at Dao

As you step into the lobby of Dao by Dorsett AMTD, there’s something that’s hard to miss. You’ll notice a towering wall of lush, green plants. And here’s the twist. It’s not just for show. You can actually adopt one of these vibrant plants for your room. It’s perfect for long-term stays, but even for us, who were just staying for two nights, the idea was too tempting to resist.

All we did was point out which plants we wanted — we chose these two, which are apparently father and son — and the staff brought it up within 15 minutes. There is even a card that explains how to care for it.

There was also the chance to rent a red-light therapy machine. All you have to do is plug it in, and device bathes your room in a warm red hue, offering numerous benefits for your skin and muscles.

And here’s the cherry on top — Dao’s Turndown Service. Imagine this: it’s getting late, you’re in the mood for a sweet treat and a nightcap, but you don’t want to venture out (even if it is convenient). You can just give the receptionist a call and order dessert and a drink before 10pm. It was perfect for our movie nights. Speaking of which, Dao uses Samsung TVs, so if you’re not sure if it’s compatible with your phone for screen sharing, simply bring along a laptop and an adapter and request for a HDMI cable.

Dao’s Turndown Service is part of our Dao+ perks, which also included other complimentary services and amenities like In-room breakfast with Prosecco, Welcome Fruits Box, and Bacha Coffee.

“The Way”

Dao is Chinese for ‘the way’. It symbolises Dao’s role in paving the way for their guests to explore the community and immerse themselves in the neighbourhood.

Nestled in a prime location, Dao allows guests to explore the area with convenience. While Dao is equipped with an infinity pool and gym, you can rent bikes to explore the neighbourhood and even sign up for a complimentary class at CLMB studio, Singapore’s first vertical studio, which is located in the same building as Dao.

We embraced the spirit of adventure and embarked on cafe-hopping adventures and visited art exhibitions, all within easy reach. After all, this is Tanjong Pagar. Being just 10 minutes away from the nearest NTUC, we decided to get creative in the kitchen and cook a meal together on the second day. It was honestly one of our most memorable moments of our staycation, made even more delightful by Dao’s friendly staff. They went above and beyond by providing us with extra virgin olive oil, sparing us from purchasing a whole bottle for a single meal.

As much as we enjoyed our culinary adventure, we also wanted to savour our stay without the hassle of cooking.

Food review at Dao

Collective — Dao’s all-day dining restaurant — is a haven for those who wish to relish Singapore’s local delicacies without breaking a sweat (literally).

Asian-fusion dishes at Collective

Collective serves an enticing array of Asian fusion dishes such as Dao’s Nasi Lemak, Dao’s Seafood Laksa, Truffle Wagyu Beef Horfun, and more. While traditionalists might argue that you need to immerse yourself in the hustle and bustle of hawker centers for an authentic experience, we appreciated the relaxed and air-conditioned setting after a long day.

We couldn’t resist trying Dao’s Seafood Laksa, which, although rich in complex flavours, was missing that extra kick of spice or “wok hey.” However, the Braised Angus Beef Cheek was a flawless masterpiece,. It was tender, with classic flavours that left us with nothing to complain about.

Braised Angus Beef Cheeks melts in your mouth!

The Cognac Scented Lobster Bisque was amazing too. Creamy, punchy with flavours. But if it’s one dish you have to get, it’s the Honey Maple Truffle Wing. Perfectly crispy, with the right amount of salty and sweetness. The high-quality maple syrup here really shines through, and it’s important that they used good maple syrup and not cheap ones because you can really taste the rich caramels instead of just flat sweetness. I recommend asking for a side of Fermented Shrimp Chilli Sauce to add another layer of flavours on this.

A must-try dish at Collective — Honey Maple Truffle Wing

As Dao is big on wellness, it’s not surprise to find a wide range of OMNI dishes on their menu, such as the OMNI Chilli Crab Cake, OMNI Tuna Kueh Pie Tee, OMNI Miso Glazed Classic Fillet, and more.

For those who are seeking for lighter meals, you can also opt for their canape and cocktails.
