American Cheeseburger (Smash Burger) at Five Guys

With the advent of American burger chain Shake Shack a year ago, Singapore is yet again seeing another reputable establishment- Five Guys. Stepping into the restaurant might be a little confusing for some as there are well, more than five guys working there. A common misconception, no doubt. While the truth is, the distinguished name originated from the five Murrell brothers who formulated the famous burger recipe.

American Smash Burgers

With the option to choose from a large collection of toppings, you can truly construct the burger of your preference. From the classic smash burger with nothing more than 2 brown-crusted patties, gooey cheese and a simple burger sauce to a gourmet-style concoction with complex flavours of greens and aiolis.

Not wanting to steer too far from the classic American zest, I only added caramelized onions, raw onions and lettuce for sweetness and freshness.

The overall mouthfeel, texture and flavour of the burger weren’t too disappointing. The patties could definitely be juicier though.

Ranging from $11- $17, their menu comprises Hamburger, Cheeseburger, Bacon Burger, Bacon Cheeseburger. Those with a small appetite can opt for the little versions which are about $2 cheaper.

And what are burgers without a handful of fries and a thick shake to wash it all down.

Five Guy’s Cajun Fries comes Small (S$7), Medium (S$9) and Large (S$11). Not knowing those sizes are measured by American standards, we bought a Large and we were astonished by the overflowing pool of fries in our bag. We later read an article by Mashed which exposed the excessive fries as an illusion to make us feel like we “are getting a good deal”. But of course, the fries had a certain amount of charm to them that renders them irresistable.

The Shakes were the hardest thing to decide on. $10 for a cup with unlimited mix-ins from *takes deep breath* Chocolate, Peanut Butter, Coffee, Malted Milk, Cherry, Salted Caramel, Strawberry, Banana, Vanilla, Oreo Creme, Oreo Cookie Pieces.

I swear by the Peanut Butter, Salted Caramel and Oreo Cookie Pieces combination for that lowkey Reese Cup flavour, with the added touch of salt and crunch. Meanwhile, heretics champion for the sweet and savoury combination of peanut butter and bacon.

Frankly, not a fan of their burgers. But, their fries and milkshake made it memorable.
