Do you remember what your go-to snack at Mama Shops was? Mine was a 20c ice-pop that I would get after school.

Mama Diam, a new shophouse along Prinsep Street, invokes nostalgia and confusion concurrently. Its large red sign, rustic floor tiles, old-school packaging and vintage magazines digs out buried memories. But you’re right to wonder what business a mama shop has at a bar-filled location.

Breathe in the nostalgia before opening- spoiler alert- the sliding door on the left of the unmanned counter, which takes you to where the real party is.

Local-themed speakeasy bar

The fake door reveals a speakeasy bar.

The menu ties in with the local retro theme where you’ll find interesting fusion dishes such as Herbal Bak Kut Teh Udon (S$15) and Crab Kueh Pie Tee (S$13).

More modern flavours can be found in their A4 Wagyu Aburi Beef Nigiri (S$19), Truffle Mushroom Wonton (S$15) and Pork Belly Char Siew Tacos (S$13).

The specially curated 9 Bites of Wonder (S$38) is a great remedy if you’re at a loss for choice.

It includes Crab Kueh Pie Tee, Drunken Chicken Roulade with Marinated Black Fungus, Oyster Casino, Stuffed Seafood Lychee, Butter Boxing Chicken, Seaweed Corn Ribs, Curry Beef Pithivier, Truffle Mushroom Wonton in Chili Oil and Pork Belly Char Siew Tacos.

It’s strange how the food has been in the spotlight for a speakeasy bar huh?

It shouldn’t come as a surprise but Mama Diam serves local-inspired cocktails such as Mama’s Kopi (S$16) and Pandan Sour (S$16).

Red, White, Champagne and others are also on the menu, but I’d think it’s a crime to leave without ordering their exclusive drinks.

Tea such as Oolong and Lychee is also served in a pot for S$28.
