Cavern Restaurant review – Singapore’s first cave dining at Mandai

Ambience at Cavern Restaurant

Gimmicky restaurants tend to have a bad reputation, let alone one at a theme park.

But we tried Mandai’s newest Cavern Restaurant, located outside Rainforest Wild Asia, and here’s our honest opinion it.

First impression of the place?

Immediate wow.

They did a fantastic job with the decors and furnishing, truly creating the illusion of dining inside a cave.

If you didn’t know, Cavern Restaurant was inspired by the Mulu Caves of Sarawak, one of the largest and most intricate cavesystems in Southeast Asia and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

But what about the food?

Crystal Cave Salad review
Crystal Cave Salad

To be honest, I was surprised with the prices at Cavern Restaurant. It’s just slightly more expensive than a cafe brunch, with mains starting from $22 — but bear in mind you’re dining at a place that looks like this.

Artisan sourdough with butter and spring onion oil

The highlights for us had to be the Stone Hearth Loaf ($12), which is an artisan sourdough. A little pricey for bread, I have to admit, but it tasted amazing. Just enough crust, but not dry enough that it feels like its sandpapering your upper palate. And the butter… oh my god. It’s drizzled with a punchy, vibrant spring onion oil, which elevated the entire bite.

Kaya donut at Cavern Restaurant

Not sure why the bakes here are so fantastic, but their Pandan Bambolini ($6 for one) had that nice veil of crisp on the surface. The kaya filling was also not too sweet.

Ironstrike Knuckle at Cavern Restaurant

As for the big plates, without yapping too much, I’d recomend the Ironstrike Knuckle ($28), Crystal Cave Salad ($22) and Rigatoni Alla Vodka ($22).

The Forest Mushroom ($12) is also great if you want to get something to share.

So is it worth going, or just a gimmick?

Personally, I’d recommend it.

Aside from the Pulled Pork Taco ($22), the prices of the dishes that I got were reasonable, and tasted great.

If it wasn’t so out of the way, I’d honestly be back for the bread and donuts a lot more frequently.
