Gayageum might not seem like much from the outside, but it’s one of the more authentic Korean family restaurants in Singapore. Tucked in the basement of Bukit Timah Shopping Centre, the shoddy appearance reminded me of Kim Dae Mun, another authentic Korean restaurant at Orchard. But true enough, it’s this kind of restaurants that serve the most authentic cuisines.

Authentic Korean cuisine

The first thing we noticed was the Special Lunch Sets at S$9.5 nett. Unfortunately, it’s only available on weekdays from 11:30am- 3pm, and we visited on a weekend night. The Kimchi Pork Soup and Spicy Grilled Pork were really calling out to me.

Anyway, we proceeded to order some dishes to share. We got the Ginseng Chicken Soup with Rice (S$23), Army Stew (S$16) and Fried Chicken in Spicy Soy (S$21).

Every dish was piping hot, resulting in a hearty and satisfying meal. The Army Stew was pretty standard. But I mean you can’t really go wrong with it.

And while the Ginseng Chicken Soup was just as I expected. Clean, light-flavoured, with earthy undertones. The ginseng really wasn’t that prominent, but I wouldn’t expect at S$21 dish in Singapore to be anyway.

We got the small for our Fried Chicken, which came in Sweet, Spicy, Soy and Spicy Soy. We chose Spicy Soy which proved to be a great choice with its balance of umami with a touch of spice. Even those with a low spice tolerance could endure this, probably. But, this huge plate of chicken, albeit labelled small, was way too much for me and two others to handle, especially since we were already sharing two stews.

Affordable, hearty and authentic. I can’t really think of a reason not to come back to Gayageum!
