Kohaku Sabo review – Viral jiggly cat pudding and duck pudding

Viral jiggly duck pudding at Kohaku Sabo

Cue “chipi chipi chapa chapa” song on TikTok, because this viral jiggly cat pudding is finally available in Singapore.

If you haven’t heard, Kohaku Sabo, a Japanese tendon restaurant in Chinatown, has started selling the TikTok-famous cat pudding that jiggles like crazy. They’ve also recently added the jiggly duck pudding to their menu.

But the question remains — are they as good as they look, or are they just gimmicky food?

Does the jiggly cat pudding even taste good?

$8.8 for a dessert is honestly a reasonable price. But still, would you really want to pay for a dessert that only looks good, but tastes mediocre?

Fortunately, the puddings tasted pretty good.

The Jiggly Cat Pudding ($8.8) came in Taro and Coconut flavours. Both were surprisingly not too sweet, and we thought that they tasted pretty close to the real deal too; none of that artificial and flat-tasting flavours.

The puddings are served with a brush, chocolate sauce as “ink” and evaporated milk. So, feel free to draw as many quirky designs on your cat before digging in!

Even though the pudding looked pretty solid, considering it doesn’t break apart no matter how hard you shake the tray, it had a soft texture that melted right in our mouths.

Similarly, the Bouncing Duck ($8.8), the duck variation of this jiggly pudding dessert, had the same texture. However, it came in a banana flavour, and is served on top of fruits and a blue jelly, which is supposed to resembled a lake.

Banana desserts have a bad reputation for tasting horribly artificial. But this was alright. It definitely doesn’t taste like the actual banana fruit, but it was somewhat similar. More importantly, it didn’t have that distinct artificial flavouring aftertaste.

Personally, we preferred the cat puddings for their flavours.

Other food at Kohaku Sabo

If the menu at Kohaku Sabo looks familiar, it’s because they’re a Japanese teahouse subsidiary of Tendon Kohaku, a popular tendon restaurant in Singapore.

Of course, you have to try their signature tendon, which is a Japanese tempura rice bowl.

Premium Tendon ($28.8)

We ordered the Premium Tendon ($28.8) for the largest variety of ingredients. It included the standard ones like prawn and mushroom. But interestingly, it also included eel, chicken breast, and onsen egg, which I’ve never tried in tempura form before.

Overall, the flavour was good, but the tempura were not as crispy as it should’ve been. Though it is worth mentioning that this was probably an inconsistency issue, as the reviews on Google generally praise their tendon.

Ikura Salmon Cutlet with Avocado on Flavoured Rice ($24.8)

Another signature item at Kohaku Sabo is the Ikura Salmon Cutlet with Avocado on Flavoured Rice ($24.8).

Salmon sashimi is deep fried, resulting in a crispy, aromatic shell, while the inside remains fresh and briney.

This by itself was alright. But its the mix of egg mayo, avocado and ikura that really elevated the dish. It was rich and flavourful, yet light on the palate due to the addition of salad. We highly recommend giving this a try

Lastly, the Mentaiko Udon ($22) was amazing. Creamy and umami, every strand of the udon was perfectly coated in the sauce.

If you’re torn between the udon and tendon, you can opt for the Half & Half ($23), which allows you to choose half portions of the Kohaku Tendon and your choice of udon.

This is somewhat common offering in restaurants in Japan, so we were surprised to find it in Singapore.

Drinks at Kohaku Sabo

We’ve only tried the Matcha Latte at Kohaku Sabo. It was sweet and lacking of flavour. We would not recommend unless you’re really thirsty as there are better cafes in Chinatown where you can get a proper cup of matcha.
