First time hearing about Louis Vuitton x Murakami?
The story begins 20 years ago. In 2003, then-Louis Vuitton Creative Director Marc Jacobs reached out to Murakami, an artist known for his vivid, playful, and boundary-pushing work that melded Japanese pop culture with fine art.
Murakami’s unique style, often described as “Superflat” for its bold use of flat, cartoon-like imagery, was a stark contrast to Louis Vuitton’s storied heritage of understated elegance. Yet, this unlikely pairing resulted in an iconic synergy that blended tradition with modernity.
Murakami was tasked with reimagining Louis Vuitton’s classic monogram, a symbol of the brand’s legacy. The result was a bold, multi-colored reinterpretation of the monogram on a white or black background. This colourful redesign, launched as part of Louis Vuitton’s Spring/Summer 2003 collection, became an instant sensation. The collaboration also included whimsical designs like the Cherry Blossom print, which playfully juxtaposed the seriousness of luxury with Murakami’s signature kawaii aesthetic.
