Japanese teppanyaki doesn’t always have to be at expensive restaurants with premium ingredients.

Sure, having high-quality cuts of meat might be great. But, you can still enjoy a good meal at HeNiu Teppanyaki, located at 313@Somerset’s Food Republic.

Our honest review of HeNiu Teppanyaki

$8.9 Lunch Sets

HeNiu Teppanyaki offers very wallet-friendly lunch sets starting from $8.9. The meal includes a portion of meat- with the choice of chicken, beef, pork, seafood and lamb- white rice, soup and vegetables.

I prefer the beansprouts that HeNiu used to serve a few years back. But, their stir-fried lettuce wasn’t a bad replacement too. It was crunchy, and sweet and aromatic from the garlic. Most importantly, its freshness was a great counterbalance to the savoury sauce, especially if order it in spicy.

I got their pork while my friend chose the chicken with teriyaki sauce, a new item on HeNiu’s menu.

Like their beef and lamb, the pork was stir-fried in a savoury brown sauce. On the other hand, the chicken was served dry with a drizzle of a light teriyaki sauce. The Teriyaki Chicken won in terms of presentation, in my opinion.

The pork, beef and lamb were delectable in their own ways. But the chicken really stood out. A good sear, a juicy texture. I’m not a huge fan of chicken but this really won me over. My go-to orders go between the pork and beef, but I might be sticking with the chicken for a while now.

If you do miss their lunch promotion, which is only valid on weekdays from 11am to 2pm, fret not as their usual set meals are only slightly more expensive at $12.

Teppanyaki — interactive Dining Experience

For $8.9, not only do you get an amazing meal, you get to watch the chef cook in front of you. Don’t expect any crazy stunts you’d expect from premium restaurants. But it certainly wasn’t a mundane performance at HeNiu too!

Our verdict

So what’s our review of HeNiu Teppanyaki?

For $8.9 (or $12 if you miss the lunchtime promotion), it was a very satisfying and filling meal. In fact, I would’ve paid a higher price for this (but let’s not let HeNiu find out about this!).
