Alchemist, a local coffee roaster and cafe, is known for their awe-inspiring cafe interior.

Beyond the nostalgic charm of the Tai Seng’s Khong Guan Building outlet and the captivating dark academia ambience at The Mill, their latest cafe at Somerset’s The Heeren unveils a serene Japanese zen garden-inspired setting.

Espresso-based coffee starts from $4. Their menu also includes a rotation of pastries.

Here’s what we think about their branch in Tanjong Pagar: Alchemist review.

2. Hvala

Kaze Straight Matcha at Hvala cafe in 111 Somerset

Located at 111 Somerset, Hvala is famous for its matcha and hojicha.

To get the full experience of the robust vegetal notes of ceremonial matcha, a pure and high-grade matcha powder, get their Kaze Matcha ($8) or Hana Matcha ($10). Its astringency may not suit everyone’s palate. Instead, their Matcha Latte or Hojicha Latte ($6.8) ends on a sweeter note, while providing a robust, albeit relatively less refined, flavour.

Hvala’s menu extends to cakes and ice cream with flavours other than Japanese tea, such as Sweet Potato Cake ($8.8) and Goma Gelato ($5.8).

Renown for their array of fruit tarts and cakes, Fruit Paradise strictly uses the freshest fruits that are hand-picked by their Japanese patissiers daily.

This cafe in Somerset offers a wide range of tarts such as the Strawberry Tiramisu to nuts such as Mont Blanc. We recommend their Chocolate Banana Cake, which features an assembly of banana, whipped cream and chocolate sponge. It was fragrant, airy and moist; just a divine bite.

12. Kim Dae Mun

This cosy Korean restaurant might be a short walk from Somerset MRT station but it has to be included in this list.

Do not let its unpretentious appearance fool you. She may be dressed like a school canteen but she can cook up an array of traditional Korean dishes. In fact, Kim Dae Mun was founded by an ahjumma, translating to aunt in Korea, which explains the authentic and homely flavours.

The menu includes hotplates, stews and side dishes like dumplings, most under $10.

Their set includes a choice of meat: beef, pork, chicken, teriyaki chicken, seafood and lamb, a steamy bowl of rice, and stir-fried lettuce. Every option is equally good (I’ve tried them all), and certainly worth the price, especially with substantial portions that will leave you satisfied after the meal.
