Lucine by LUNA review – new cafe at 111 Somerset

Lucine by LUNA brunch spread

If you love the cakes at LUNA, you’re going to love these hearty sandwiches at their new concept.

Lucine by LUNA is a new cafe at 111 Somerset, offering not just their famous cakes and tarts, but also hot food like sandwiches, salads and all-day breakfast.

How’s the food at Lucine by LUNA?

For a place that’s so famous for their cakes, one might wonder if their newly-designed hot food menu would live up to the hype. Our verdict? Definitely worth the visit.

Sandwiches at Lucine — are they even good?

The good thing is — the sandwiches here are relatively cheaper than some of the best breakfast sandwiches in Singapore.

Tofu Katsu at Lucine by LUNA
Tofu Katsu ($10.9)

In addition to the classics, opt for the Tofu Katsu ($10.9) — their most unique offering.

Tofu is a pretty popular plant-based protein for rice bowls or salads. But it’s rarely found in a sandwich, probably because of how soft and delicate they are.

I was skeptical about their Tofu Katsu, but a surprisingly they managed to make a tofu sandwich work. This not only held onto its structural integrity (it didn’t fall apart immediately), but it was also very flavourful, thanks to the panko crust and sriracha mayo.

Without a doubt, it was an interesting experience. But, if you want something a little more sinful, you can’t go wrong with their Grilled Cheese ($12.9) and Spam & Cheese ($10.9).

The menu also includes Hamburg Steak ($13.9) and Egg Mayo ($10.9).

Salads and breakfast at Lucine

Sous Vide Chicken Salad at Lucine by LUNA
Sous Vide Chicken Salad ($12.9)

If you’re not a carbs girlie, perhaps their salads will be more enticing. Opt for a high-protein Sous Vide Chicken Salad ($12.9).

I loved how well marinated the chicken breast was. It was packed with flavours and so aromatic with herbs. Bonus points for the tender texture of course. The homemade Italian herb dressing also complemented the chicken well.

Alternatively, opt for the Lucine Scrambled Eggs ($8.9), a simple breakfast plate with soft scrambled eggs, mixed green salad, and toasted sourdough. If it’s not enough, you can also add on Sauteed Garlic Mushrooms ($3.9) and Creamed Spinach ($3.9).

If you’re here with friends, you can also opt for sharing bites like Truffle Tater Tots ($9.9). This was such a well executed dish. Crispy shell, fluffy shaved potatoes on the inside. The truffle mayo dip it was paired with was also so aromatic.

Desserts

Of course, you can’t leave without desserts. This is LUNA’s sister cafe after all.

Pistachio Roulade
Pistachio Roulade ($8.5)

Out of the three desserts we tried at Lucine, the Pistachio Roulade ($8.8) was indubitably the best. The sponge cake had such an intensely nutty pistachio flavour, which was surprising considering how pistachio usually shines through from the ganaches or creams.

Personally, the dessert would’ve been perfect on its own because I love the super nutty flavour. But, for those who prefer a more balanced dessert, you’ll be happy to know that the addition of raspberry compote cuts away some of that nuttiness.

Blossom dessert
Blossom ($8.5)

If you want to impress your friends online, opt for the Blossom ($8.5), their most aesthetic dessert.

It’s packed with strawberries — starting from a strawberry elderflower yoghurt mousse, to strawberry curd and compote. But, the citrusy notes are properly counterbalanced by the deeper, earthier flavours of a rose sponge.

Citrus Tart

Lastly, the Citrus Tart ($8.5) had a potent lime curd, which was so tangy.

Drinks at Lucine by LUNA

In addition to the standard espresso-based coffee, such as a Long Black ($5), Latte ($6), and Mocha ($6.5), experiment with interesting flavoured coffee at this cafe instead.

Tiramisu Latte and Black Sesame Latte
Tiramisu Latte (left) and Black Sesame Latte (right)

For instance, the Tiramisu Latte ($8.5) had a nice touch of cream and chocolate. But as cloying as it looks, it was actually not too sweet. The boldness of the coffee still shined through. This was really just liquid tiramisu.

Same for the Black Sesame Latte ($8.5). You get those strong nutty flavours from black sesame, without overpowering the espresso.
