Coucou is an authentic Swiss restaurant at Tanjong Pagar, helmed by globally-renowned Executive Chef Sebastian Donati. Some of the recipes are far more than authentic, but actual formulas passed down from his family, such as the Salad CouCou ($12). It’s a simple salad, drizzled with ‘Grand Pere’ dressing, which translates to grandfather’s dressing.

Of course, while you’re at a Swiss restaurant, you have to order a fondue to share. A fondue pot at Coucou, available in the original recipe, without alcohol, with chilli padi, and more, starts from $38 per person, with a minimum order for two people.

But if it’s one dish you have to get before leaving, it’s the Meringues a la Double Creme de Gruyere ($20) — a meringue elevated with a surprisingly light gruyere cream and tangy compote.

Get this with Koshihikari Rice ($18), cooked in Hainanese spices and cockscomb, and you’ll get a European version of the Hainanese chicken rice.

Another standout dish is the Heirloom Tomatoes & Burrata ($24), which proves that simple ingredients can be the star of the show when handled right. Meaty and juicy tomatoes are paired with a grassy and aromatic basil and tarragon sorbet. And for an extra crunch, the dish is topped with puffed quinoa.

15. Celebrity Big Prawn Noodle

For one of the best prawn noodles in Singapore, you have to head down to Tanjong Pagar Plaza Market & Food Centre, located beside the MRT station.

To make their prawn broth extra umami, the chefs melt a pile of pork lard into their shells before boiling it with other aromatics. Don’t worry about the oil though. It’s filtered out of the broth at the final stage.

Their signature Porks Ribs Big Prawn Mee costs $6.5 for a regular size and $8.5 for an upsize. Typically, stores would just add more noodles for a large bowl, but big-eaters will be delighted to hear that they actually give an extra heap of prawns.

If you’re not a fan of pork ribs, you can also get their Big Prawn Mee or Big Prawn Mee with Sliced Abalone.

Like its name suggests, Aburi, translating to “sear” in Japanese, the chefs sear their meats at high temperatures to impart a smokey aroma upon them. This Japanese restaurant also pride themselves on their premium A4/A5 Miyazaki Wagyu, which tasted just like the ones I’ve had in Japan. But frankly, their pork deserves an equal amount of attention.

Get the Premium Miyazakigyu Jyu ($35.9) to savour rich buttery flavours of A4/A5 Miyazaki Wagyu. But, for a more affordable and less sinful option, the 3 Kind Buta Combo Jyu ($22.9) allows you taste the best of not two, but three worlds — pork belly, pork loin and iberico pork jowl.

All their Soontofus, except for the Sesame Soontofu ($19.9) contain pork and vegetables. The Kimchi ($21.9) is a classic, but if you want something more adventurous, we recommend the Oyster ($21.9) just so you can have a taste of how that fresh briney flavour complements the fermented spices in the soup.

Located on the first floor of International Plaza. Doco Donburi serves affordable Japanese rice bowls with a local twist. For one, all bowls come with a serving of crispy fish skin for that extra crunch and umami. But on top of classic options like Beef and Prawns, you can also find locally-inspired bowls like Sh-Otah Don ($11.9).

The most affordable bowls at Doco Donburi are the Sh-Ken Don ($10.9) and Sh-Room Don ($10.9), comprising chicken shimeji mushrooms respectively.

City Hot Pot fills up the basement of Guoco Tower with its aromatic soup base, starting at affordable prices of $5.99. The prices here are reasonable. For instance, a plate of Australian Wagyu Beef costs $11.99 and a whole lobster is priced a $59.99.

City Hot Pot is also inspired by Taiwanese hot pot style, as seen from the incorporation of Braised Pork Rice ($3.99), a common offering in Taiwan. otpot and a Taiwan staple might not seem like the best pairing, but just trust us. Melt-in-your-mouth, flavorful, homely, it was one of the best Braised Pork Rice we’ve ever had.
