Old Hen Coffee review – The only cafe I’ll get cold brew from

The sad truth about cold brew is that most of the time, you’re paying way more than you’re supposed to.

Compared to filter coffee and espresso-based coffees, cold brew is comparably easier to make at home, and the quality can’t even differ that much once you get the ratios and brew time right. In short, it’s literally just steeping coffee grounds in cold water overnight.

But, if I do have to get cold brew in Singapore, one of the few cafes I’d visit is Old Hen Coffee.

Located at Rangoon Road, Old Hen Coffee specialises in both caffeinated and non-caffeinated cold brews.

Here’s what we like about them.

Why is their cold brew so good?

Old Hen Coffee has one of the best cold brews in Singapore because you can actually detect prominent tasting notes.

In general, cold brew is perfect for people who dislike the bitterness of espresso-based coffee. Steeping coffee grounds in the cold water instead of hot allows the flavours to slowly seep out, leaving behind the astringency of coffee. However, most cold brew just taste like “plain coffee”, while Old Hen Coffee’s actually retains the innate tasting notes of the coffee they use.

Cold Brew (Black)

Take the Cold Brew Black ($6.9) for example. It has a floral aroma and a light body, akin to a black tea.

Some cafes’ cold brew would taste nutty or malty, so it’s rare to find one that has a completely different flavour profile.

On the other hand, their White ($7.5) had a milkier flavour, with a mellower taste. You can’t really detect strong tasting notes here, but it’s perfect for the Starbucks Iced Latte girlies.

Personally, I prefer a “stronger” cold brew, but I can see the appeal for this.

Coffee addicts that need their daily caffeine intake can opt for their 1 Litre Cold Brew ($21.5).

One of the best matcha cold brews in Singapore

While the coffee was great, we recommend getting the Cold Matcha Milk ($8) — one of the best cold brew matcha we’ve had in Singapore.

It had just the right intensity of matcha and the right level of sweetness. The velvety texture of the drink was another bonus!

Old Hen Coffee also sells Mocha ($8.5) and Cold Cocoa ($7.5) which uses premium Valrhona Dark Cocoa, and a variety of Kombucha ($8.5), available in Original, Ginger Lemon and Cherry Plum.

What to eat at Old Hen Coffee?

Besides cold brew, they also have a pretty extensive all day menu that includes smoothie bowls, brunch items and pasta.
