When American burger conglomerate Shake Shack landed in Jewel, I was one of the suckers who queued for 3 hours. I’m just going to spoil it for you, it was absolutely worth it. 

Shack Shack Double Shack Burger

I’ve tried all their burgers on the original menu and I’ve only been back for the Double Shackburger (S$12.7) since. It was the classic. Potato buns, beautifully seared patties, cheese, of course, their special ShackSauce and tomatoes and lettuce for health measures.

It was the perfect bite.

Granted, some may find this too sinful as liquid gold trickles down your chin. I have to admit that it is slightly oilier than most burgers I’ve had in Singapore but I would gladly dance with the devil for another bite.

Those who have to have bacon in their burgers can opt for the SmokeShack (S$10.9 for Single; S$14.9 for Double) that has a topping of applewood-smoked bacon and cherry peppers. It adds depth to the burger but I could do without it to save a couple of bucks.

The most controversial item is their Shroom Burger’s (S$10.8) crisp-fried portobello mushroom. They say mushrooms, when cooked in a certain way, can emanate the same quality as meat and this was a vegetarian burger I could get by. It was crispy and loaded with melted cheddar and a thick cut of portobello mushroom that was mouth-wateringly umami.

You can also get the Shack Stack (S$14.3) which is a cross-breed of the Shroom Burger and ShackBurger if you want a piece of meat in there regardless.

The Cheese Fries were questionable though; S$5 for a measly portion and lackluster cheese sauce.

Verdict

To me, the perfect burger isn’t about the size and toppings. Sure, a 10 inch burger with lobster and truffle might be enticing, but it was quality of each individual component that truly mattered. Buns that were fluffy with a bit of spring and freshly ground beef with a punchy beef flavour, juice and bits of crisp at the edges… these were perfectly executed at Shake Shack, making this one of the best burgers in Singapore.
