If you are one to lament that Singapore’s cafe scene is repetitive and dull, Small Tables is here to offer something different. Pave the way for Orchard’s highly anticipated sidewalk cafe, serving signature Ipoh dishes, white coffee and other scrumptious Asian flavours.

The Ipoh Curry Mee ($20) wins the title of signature dish for a reason. Served dry or with soup, it came loaded with gourmet ingredients – think caramelised char siew, crispy pork belly, giant poached prawns, braised pig ears and pig skin. My personal preference is the soup version as the use of fresh prawn stock lent the curry base a great depth of flavour.

Special mention to the char siew and pork belly, for they were the winning factors of the dish for me. These were huge, fatty chunks of meat and expertly made in-house. So good that we made an order for the Special Roast Pork Platter ($24) to savour them on their own.

The hor fun is made fresh daily in Ipoh with natural spring water that bestows its silkiness, as such is the Ipoh Chee Cheong Fun ($12). The silky rice noodles soaked up every ounce of Ipoh curry and special chilli sauce, topped with fried beancurd skin and green chilli.

Tuning in to Ipoh’s lifestyle of gathering over meals and languid days, the menu features many sharing plates as well. We had the Hakka Yong Tau Foo ($16), Cuttlefish & Water Spinach ($12) and Whole Fish Otah ($28).

What’s a cafe visit without coffee? With coffee beans roasted the traditional Ipoh way, the signature Ipoh White Coffee ($7.5) is made with the perfect ratio of condensed milk to coffee, delivering the right amount of sweetness and smokiness. A freshly grilled kaya taiyaki is served on the side.

Overall, a modish cafe to gather with friends around small tables, whilst engaging in light-hearted conversation and savouring delectable Ipoh flavours. Be sure to add Small Tables to your go-to cafe list.
