I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. If you’re traveling to Jeju Island, you have to make time for the west in your itinerary. While it’s not as popular as the Jeju-do, the area close to the airport, or Seogwipo, where some of the most popular tourist attractions such as Cheonjiyeon Waterfalls and Jeongbang Waterfall lay, it’s the best place.

The west is reserved for the more laidback traveller, with tons of famous beaches, nice hiking trails, and most importantly, this seaside cafe — Ultramarine Coffee.

The finishing point of a hike

Ultramarine Coffee is secluded on the west coast of the island. It’s also situated along the Jeju Olle Trail, which is a long-distance footpath around the circumference of the island. You can start the hike from Geumneung Beach and head south, which will take you past a Wollyeong Port and Cactus Habitat.

Jeju’s Cactus Habitat is only a ten minute walk away from the cafe

The two-storey cafe provides an interrupted view of the sea, which literally sparkles under the sun. No other beaches can compare to this.

The ground floor has a three benches closer to the window, and a long table behind the benches. Most customers usually sit facing the window. While it’s technically okay to sit facing the counter, try to avoid doing so as you might be blocking another customer’s view. Meanwhile, the second floor has more lounge chairs with a sea view.

The cafe is very easy to spot from afar.

Menu at Ultramarine

Ultramarine offers two types of beans. Their Ultra Blend is a mix of Brazil and Ethiopian beans which provides a balance of citrus sand dark chocolate notes. Meanwhile, the Barista Wave, a single origin from Ethiopia, was pleasantly acidic and fruity, and had a nice grassy undertone.

While both were good in their own ways, the Ultra Blend’s profile was something that is more commonly found in Singapore cafes, while the crisp fruity and vegetal notes of the Ethiopia is a lot more rare.

For a rich and creamy drink, try their signature Black Sesame Latte (₩7,500) — a latte topped with a mild, creamy black sesame foam and crushed Oreos.

They also have a handful of small bites. Of which, the most attractive dessert was their Tiramisu (₩7,500).
