Unagi Hitsumaboshi from Unagiya Ichinoji. Japanese eel rice bowl

You might be familiar with Una Una, a Japanese unagi donburi– also known as eel rice bowl- speciality restaurant.

Founded by the same team, Unagiya Ichinoji serves unagi in different styles, including soft shell crabs, wagyu beef and fried oysters.

The 34-seater is located at Robertson Quay, a ten-minutes walk from Clarke Quay MRT Station.

Unagi Hitsumabushi starts from $36.8 and comes in three different sizes. The bento set comes with a hearty bowl of unagi donburi, pickled carrots, miso soup and ingredients to turn the donburi into an ochazuke. Ochazuke is a Japanese dish made by pouring dashi stock (or green tea in other cases) over cooked rice. It is also served with wasabi, green onions and seaweed.

While that’s a classic, we recommend getting dishes that are exclusive to the Unagiya Ichinoji.

The Unagi Wagyu Hitsumabushi ($46.8), and Unagi Oyster Hitsumabushi ($38.8) are served with quality wagyu beef and fried oyster respectively.

Of course, their speciality, unagi, was cooked perfectly. Tender, bestowed with a light char, and packed with flavour from their secret unagi sauce. The wagyu and oyster were strong contenders too. The wagyu was tender and beefy, while the oysters were fried perfectly, with a veil of crispy batter that encapsulates its plump body.

Their side dishes include Grilled Chicken Tartar ($11.8), Salmon Teriyaki ($11.8) and Salmon Sashimi ($14.8).

The Grilled Squid ($18.8) had a firm and slightly chewy bite, and was endowed with a smoky aroma.

Unagiya Ichinoji has also recently included Japanese drinks from DyDo in their menu. To balance out the umami flavours of the rice bowls, we recommend one of their fruit juices that are priced at $4.8 each.

Their Mixed Fruit Juice combines oranges, grapes, peach and strawberries, rendering a complex and addictive flavour combination. Meanwhile, their Grape Juice, a slightly sweeter drink, combines the flavours of three different types of grapes. Both drinks contain 30% real fruit juice.

For a more mellow flavour, we recommend the Torokeru Peach Nectar Drink, concocted with the puree from two peaches.
