[REVIEW] Baker’s Brew Chinese New Year goodies

Pineapple tarts in Singapore

Celebrate Chinese New Year (CNY) 2023 slightly differently this year.

Baker’s Brew takes inspiration from Peranakan heritage for this year’s CNY goodies — through its flavours and art.

Peranakan-inspired Chinese New Year (CNY) snacks

Nostalgia is invoked with their distinct packaging. Five different colours of old-school biscuit tins contains the freshest take on familiar traditional CNY snacks.

Peranakan Collection (Bundle of 5)

For starters, the Ondeh Ondeh Cookies ($28.8) takes a page from our well-loved kueh. The cookies are fragrant with pandan, and sweetened with gula Melaka coconut filling. It’s soft, not too sweet, but it does get a little cloying on your fifth bite.

Back with the classics, Baker’s Brew Peanut Almond Cookies ($28.8) were aromatic and nutty. Truly an addictive snack.

Alternatively, for something different this year, opt for the Hae Bee Hiam Cookies ($28.8). Your favourite shrimp-and-sambal condiment is condensed into a single bite. It’s flavourful, aromatic, and contains a kick of spice. This was a good change of pace from the sweets.

Their Pineapple Pillows ($28.8) uses the traditional pastry shell, but with a softer texture. Baker’s Brew is also proud of their less sugary variation, as they replaced the filling with genuine Thai pineapple filling for that sweet and salty balance.

I prefer this to typical pineapple tarts. The reassurance that it’s a guilt-free afternoon snack is definitely one reason, but I also enjoy how it is less buttery, and has a looser texture.

Switch up your snacks repertoire with a fusion of two Singaporean favourites — pineapple tart and bak kwa. Each Pineapple Bak Kwa Cookie ($28.8) is stuffed with the same Thai pineapple paste and traditional bak kea for a delicious savoury and sweet combination. To take it up the notch on its indulgent levels, the biscuit is also buttery.

It’s sinful, but hey, it’s that one time of the year to let loose.
