Minimalistic cafes no longer excite, but when you add in two speciality drinks in your menu, that’s a different story.
FiftyFive Coffee Bar, the newest entrant to the Neil Road cafe scene, offers Manuka Honey Miso Latte ($7.5) and Strawberry Pipagao Latte ($7.5).
Just a gimmick, or worth the hype?
The Manuka Honey Miso Latte was quite unique, having an acquired taste. You can expect a strong umami and savoury profile from the miso, though the sweetness in the manuka honey didn’t come through as strong, and slowly transits to the nutty coffee towards the end of each sip. The latte was also thicker, more creamy and more savoury at the base, perhaps due to miso settling down. Personally, I felt that the profile of the drink needs some getting used to.

Meanwhile, the Iced Strawberry Pipagao Latte was well balanced. You can certainly expect to taste the unique herby and minty tasty of the pipagao. Rest assured as the coffee still shines through at the end. However, the strawberry taste was lacking.
All in all, it’s worth a drink if you’re feeling heaty and looking for something refreshing!

Of course, speciality coffee is on the menu as well, if you’re not down for something quirky.
Pair your coffee with small bites, such as Homemade Apple Tart ($7.5) and Chocolate Babka ($7).
The Chocolate Babka is drizzled on with homemade chocolate sauce. You’d find that the chocolatey brioche isn’t too sweet, while the dark chocolate wasn’t too bitter either. Despite that, I would have preferred more sauce as the brioche was a little dry at some parts without it.

This hidden cafe bar is located on the second floor of the shophouse. A bar concept will be introduced to the cafe this coming may.
