Les Misérables: The Arena Spectacular Singapore review

Curtain call for Les Miserables The Arena Spectacular Singapore

I went into Les Misérables: The Arena Spectacular World Tour in Singapore with honestly lower expectations — mostly because this isn’t the traditional musical I’d seen before.

To be precise, the orchestra is placed on the stage itself instead of hidden below like in classic theatre productions. This means that there was no stage changes, which was a huge shift from the revolving stage in the original London Production.

At first I wasn’t sure how that would land — but it turned out to be one of the most captivating versions I’ve experienced.

A focus on performance over set pieces

The stripped‑back staging might seem visually unexciting, when you first hear about it. But it actually makes you lean into the heart of the characters’ stories and emotions.

With traditional set changes absent, every second is filled with intense acting and powerful singing — and the cast delivered a showstopper. Of course, the large screens on the stage, which shows close‑ups of the performers, helped.

There’s no spectacle of sets distracting you from the raw performance. You notice tiny expressions, every breath, and every emotional shift — and it makes numbers like “I Dreamed a Dream” and “One Day More” land even deeper.

One of the most striking things was how the lighting design subtly but dramatically shifted the mood throughout the show. Even without grand scenes or backgrounds, the lighting pulled you through seasons, emotions, and turns in the story with real impact.

Meet the cast of Les Misérables Singapore

The Singapore run brought together an incredible international cast, anchored by both West End and Broadway performers.

Principal cast members included:

  • Jean Valjean: Gerónimo Rauch
  • Javert: Jeremy Secomb
  • Madame Thenardier: Lea Selonga
  • Fantine: Na‑Young Jeon
  • Éponine: Nathania Ong
  • Thénardier: Red Concepcióm
  • Marius: Will Callan
  • Cosette: Lulu‑Mae Pears
  • Enjolras: Harry Chandler
  • Bishop of Digne: Earl Carpenter

Having Nathania Ong as Éponine was a major highlight. A Singaporean raised on the global stage, she brought nuance, depth, and emotional truth to every scene!

But my favourite act goes to Na-Young Jeon’s “I Dreamed a Dream”. From the very first note, she commands the stage with a vulnerability that’s both heartbreaking and mesmerising.

Final thoughts: A refreshing take on a classic

This version of Les Misérables may be different from what traditionalists expect — but that’s exactly what makes it so compelling.

With its arena‑style presentation, pared‑down staging, and focus on performers rather than scenery, it delivers a raw and unforgettable experience.
