First World problem: insatiable cravings for salmon, not enough money. First World solution: Salmon Samurai. Located along Tras Street at Tanjong Pagar, Salmon Samurai is a salmon speciality store that serves poke bowls and everything salmon at an affordable price.

It’s also opened on weekdays at the Ocean Financial Centre for any white-collars who work in the area.

There’s quite a variety to choose from. From the basic Shoyu Poke to Teriyaki, Mala, Garlic and not forgetting Mentaiko. For the base, you can also choose among Yuzu Ume Rice, Mixed Greens, Udon Noodles, Chilled Citrus Ramen and Buckwheat Soba.

The Spicy Salmon and Chilled Citrus Ramen (S$10.9) promised a spicy mayo dressing with togarashi powder. The spice was definitely there but the togarashi powder tyrannized the flavour. A creamier texture from adding more mayo would’ve definitely restored the balance needed.

Meanwhile, there wasn’t a prominent tang to the citrus ramen that I expected. Instead, it just tasted more refreshing. It was not bad though, with a springy texture.

There are also cooked salmon on the menu for those who don’t prefer raw fish. The Salmon Mentaiko (S$10.9) was delightfully creamy and packed with umami flavours. Though, I did find it slightly saltier than I would’ve preferred.

I’ve had this on two separate occasions and the raw salmon tasted significantly better on my first visit. The recent experience wasn’t exactly bad but the texture was just a little softer and there wasn’t much flavour.

Overall, the portions were decent for the price. Hopefully the drop in standards is just a temporary issue. Otherwise, paying a slightly higher price at A Poke Theory or Aloha Poke may be a better option
