[REVIEW] Smile Martabak – Indonesia street food

A taste of Indonesia right here in our heartland — Smile Martabak brings the best of Indonesia’s street food to you at Funan Mall.

The store offers a wide variety of handcrafted food and drinks, with both savoury and sweet options to satisfy all your cravings.

Durian-flavoured martabak?

Among their sweet martabak, the Original Choco Cheese ($5.95 for 3, $19.30 for 10) stood out to us the most. The chocolate had a slight astringency to it, instead of a flat saccharine flavour that’s typical of cheap chocolates. Meanwhile, the cheese was slightly salty, which was the best complement to this martabak. I definitely recommend adding on peanuts for $0.50. It gave a very nutty fragrant and nice crunch that completed this dessert!

Apart from that, we also had the Pandan Cheese ($5.95 for 3, $19.3 for 10). The martabak was very spongey and had very fragrant pandan flavour. Just like the Choco Cheese, the sweetness was well balanced by the slightly salty cheese.

The Red Velvet martabak ($5.95 for 3, $19.3 for 10) was generously filled with cream cheese and Oreos! The martabak itself had a very mild chocolate flavour. But the cream cheese flavour really stood out. Red velvet lovers will love this; a perfect martabak rendition of a red velvet cake.

What amazed us the most was the large amount of fresh durian flesh in their Durian (D24) ($21.30 for 10). The martabak itself did not have much flavour, which was designed intentionally to allow the fragrance of the durian filling to stand out. However, the combination left a buttery aftertaste, which was something we personally did not favour.

Savoury martabak

As for their savoury options, we tried their Indomie Martabak Set (Chicken) ($10.9). This was completely different from their sweet martabaks. Deep-fried, the skin was crispy and resembled a chimichanga. The dish was filled with chicken, eggs and onions that was very nicely seasoned. The chicken was also very tender and had a good chew. While the indomie was very flavourful, it was slightly too salty for my liking. But, the acidity of tang of achar served on the side made the dish more palatable.
