Between a Caramel Macchiato from Starbucks and a Laos Naga Fully Washed Geisha filter coffee from Venture Drive, which would you choose?

Although Starbucks is widely recognised as one of the most prominent global coffee chains, it has yet to win over a small demographic of coffee connoisseurs who prefer specialty coffee. Their Caramel Macchiato might be a go-to drink for many, but to the third wave coffee aficionados, they tend to favour the subtle and intricate flavour profiles of speciality coffee.

But what sets third wave coffee apart from its predecessors? Of course, the quality of the raw beans is a critical factor in the resulting taste of the coffee. However, the duration of the coffee roasting process is also integral to its final flavour profile. Generally speaking, lighter roasts are known for their more nuanced and intricate flavour notes, whereas darker roasts, commonly used by commercial coffee chains, may sacrifice some of the more delicate flavours and aroma.

In response, Starbucks introduced the Sunny Day Blend by Nespresso® Blonde Roast Capsule Coffee to not only emulate the delicate flavours of third wave speciality coffee, but to allow coffee lovers to enjoy this experience in the comfort of their own home.

Starbuck’s new roast, the first light roast in the At Home range, skillfully combines sundried and washed beans from Latin America. Each pack contains 10 coffee pods, and are affordably priced at $7.5.

Singapore Coffee Fiesta

Starbucks’ Sunny Day Blend is one of 60 brands that will be participating in this year’s highly-anticipated Singapore Coffee Fiesta.

From now till 4 June, coffee lovers will be able to sample 60 types of coffee blends, single origins, and flavoured coffee at roadshows across the island.

Look out for the newest NESCAFÉ GOLD 3in1 ($7.5). Hopping onto the third wave coffee movement, this Singapore-exclusive blend features an addition of golden-roasted Arabica beans. I have personally sampled it and it is noticeably different from the standard GOLD Blend. The arabica is lighter, with a sort of juicy finishing to it. In comparison, the traditional GOLD blend is less nuanced.

The new NESCAFÉ® GOLD 3in1 is available in Original and Intense, and will be launched in-stores in mid-May.

While you’re stocking up for the next month, look out for attractive deals. As part of the Singapore Coffee Fiesta, coffee lovers who purchase $28, $48, or $58 worth of NESCAFÉ will receive branded kitchenware (T&Cs apply).
