Taketoshi Ito’s, famous for his metallic-looking ceramics, opens first solo exhibition at Huls Gallery

Taketoshi Ito's openwork ceramic vessel on display at HULS Gallery Duxton Hill Singapore

There’s a quiet gallery tucked into Duxton Hill showing the kind of thing you’d normally have to fly to Japan to see.

Taketoshi Ito, known for his metallic-looking is debuting its first ever solo exhibition in Singapore from 24 April to 8 May 2026 at Huls Gallery. The two-week show brings over 80 of Ito’s pieces to Singapore for the first time — tea ware, sake ware, and sculptural objects from his Mashiko studio in Tochigi Prefecture, northern Japan.

Over 80 works will be on display, and pieces are available for purchase. Expect a range that moves from functional tea bowls and sake cups to sculptural objects that read more like contemporary art than tableware.

Opening day purchases are capped at five per person — a signal the gallery is expecting serious collectors. If you want a shot at first pick, the artist himself is present on 24 and 25 April (Friday and Saturday).

Ito’s signature is openwork (sukashibori) — intricate cut-through carving applied by hand across vessels and sculptural forms. Up close, the detailing reads as metal filigree. It’s only when you feel the weight that you register it’s clay.

But even if you’re not a collector, the space itself is worth the trip.

HULS Gallery reopened its Duxton Hill flagship in late 2024 as a dedicated Japanese crafts gallery, and the showroom leans clean and minimal — white walls, soft lighting, each piece given room to breathe.

If you’ve walked past 24 Duxton Hill and assumed it was a design studio, same….

Ceramic shows of this calibre don’t come through Singapore often, and the window is tight: only 15 days, and closed on Sundays and public holidays.

If you can make it, we’d recommend visiting on 24 and 25 April, when the artist it around.
