Nanyang Kopi Kia review – Singapore’s first claypot coffee

Claypot coffee in Singapore

This might be Singapore’s first claypot coffee, but how does it really taste?

Brewing coffee in claypot is a concept that traces back to Malaysia. By storing their kopi in claypot kettles, the coffee’s temperature and aroma are enhanced, giving it a more robust and satisfying flavour.

We’re trying it for the first time at Nanyang Kopi Kia, a new traditional coffee house in Tanjong Pagar.

Claypot coffee — Just a gimmick?

Importing their coffee beans from Malaysia, Nanyang Kopi Kia Claypot Coffee takes pride in brewing all their drinks in-house daily.

Traditional Nanyang coffee to start the day

The star of the show, their signature Kopi ($2.5), boasts a well-balanced sweetness and slight acidity, with rich roasted notes that come from the beans. The coffee is also topped with a creamy foam, adding a velvety mouthfeel to each sip.

Kopi O ($2)

For those who prefer a less sweet option, order it siu dai (less sugar), or the equally popular Kopi C ($2) and Kopi O ($2.8).

I personally loved their Kopi O with no sugar. Even though its brewed with robusta beans, it’s very different from the typical ones you can get at hawker centres. Those are usually more potent, slightly buttery. But this was like a strongly-brewed tea.

When the heat kicks in, switch it up with their refreshing signature Ice Milk Coffee ($4.5) or Iced Coconut Coffee ($6.5).

Their menu also includes aromatic Teh ($2), Teh C ($2.3) and Teh O ($1.8).

Food at Nanyang Kopi Kia

Pair your traditional coffee and tea with Kaya Butter Toast ($2.5) or Chicken Curry Puff ($2) to complete the ultimate breakfast set.
