iced latte at alchemist cafe with dark matter blend

While Tanjong Pagar is heralded as a haven for cafe hoppers, a problem it entails is finding a good cup of a joe among its sheer number of cafes.

Let’s face it. Not all cafes brew satisfying coffee. They’re either balanced but lackluster, or worse, they’re sour or bitter from under or over-extraction. Hence, to save you from disappointment, we’ve dug through the haystack and curated a list of the best coffee in Tanjong Pagar.

1. Alchemist

Like how an alchemist conjures his elixirs with precision, Alchemist takes precaution to extract the best flavours from their coffee beans into their cups.

Alchemist is a local coffee roaster and cafe and their house blend, Dark Matter, has stolen our hearts with its nutty and chocolatey notes. The subtle hint of cocoa added an interesting layer onto its taste profile, and it gave the coffee a fuller body.

Their International Plaza outlet is a takeaway concept with no seats unlike their branches at The Heeren and Tai Seng and The Mill.

2. Equate Coffee

Equate Coffee stands out with its minimalist design and giant math symbols.

The Iced Latte ($6) was light-bodied and had an intense nutty undertone with a touch of chocolate in the background. Meanwhile, the Iced Mocha ($6.5) had a generous topping of chocolate drizzled at the base, accentuating the richness of the drink.

Equate Coffee’s new outlet at Orchard Central offers a wider menu comprising of pastries, sandos, and mains

While they are well known for their coffee, what Baristart Coffee prides on the most is their BIEI Jersey Milk imported directly from Hokkaido.

Coffees are priced at $6.7 for hot and $7.5 for iced. But their best-seller is undoubtedly the BIEI Jersey Milk Coffee ($7.5), which has a good balance of their intense Baristart blend and the milky sweet aftertaste from their premium milk.

Customers at Baristart almost always get the following two desserts to go with their coffee: Hokkaido Cream Puff ($7) and the Shiro Kuma Shaved Ice ($9.8).

The Populus Coffee and Co., also known as Populus Cafe, uses beans from local roastery Two Degrees North Coffee Co.

Their cold brew features a roasted, nutty flavour. It’s similar to Brawn & Brains rendition, but this has a lighter coffee aroma.

They also serve an extensive menu from western dishes to all-day breakfast. Pancake lovers can opt for their Buckwheat Pancakes which is cooked in a cast-iron pan for a rustic, crispy surface.

Cafe Kreams is loved for its beautiful canopy of gold and maple.

This garden-themed cafe also roasts its own coffee beans, bringing the best experience to their customers. The Long Black ($6.5) is acidic and recommended with the special blend for its fruity undertones, utilising beans from Kenya and Colombia. Meanwhile, the Iced Latte ($7.5) brewed with the house blend had a rich chocolate note and nutty finish.

6. Acoustics Coffee Bar

Along Neil Road, a slight walk from Tanjong Pagar MRT station — but trust us, it’s worth the walk — is Acoustics Coffee Bar.

Among foodies, they might be more famous for their brunch dishes. But, this up-and-coming cafe has been making a name in the coffee scene as it recently started roasting their own coffee locally. On the hopper is their house-roasted single origin from Brazil.
