Where contemporary ideas clash with traditional techniques, Keong Saik Bakery houses a strong line-up of classic pastries baked with a modern touch. It rose to fame with its Burnt Cheesecake’s alluring gooey texture, but Keong Saik Bakery has more to offer than that.

Contemporary take on Traditional Bakes

Its unique fusion style is shown evidently on their signature Sor Hei pastry, a tribute to the rich history of Keong Saik Road and a former owner of the bakery. Meaning ‘combing up’ in Cantonese and representing the practice of combing up one’s hair for the Majie swearing-in ceremony, the pastry took on the resemblance of a hair bun.

Foodies should be familiar with their Cruffins, but Keong Saik Bakery do offer more than flashy viennoiseries. Conventional breakfasts such as the good ol’ Kaya Toast and Soft Boiled Eggs are available as well.

Their fearsome lineup includes one more item- Burnt Cheesecake. We absolutely loved the combination of the firm exterior which wrapped around the gooey, cheesy centre. We expected an additional charred/caramelized flavour from the singed surface but it wasn’t very prominent.

As the combination of 4 different cheeses resulted in a concoction with a sweeter edge, we recommend pairing the cheesecake with a good cuppa. Brewed with robusta beans, their coffee have a strong bitter flavor with a subtle charred aftertaste.

The Burnt Cheesecake comes in Original (S$7.5) , Pandan (S$8) and Two-Faced (half Original, half Matcha; S$8.5).

Matcha Au Tarte at Keong Saik Bakery

Their Matcha Au Tarte (S$6.5) is one of the best matcha desserts I’ve had in a while, with a silky bittersweet white chocolate and matcha ganache. The bitterness is further underscored with sunflower seeds incorporated base.

Aside from burnt cheesecakes, the cruffins are quite reputable though. Despite that, I didn’t have a good experience with the Matcha Cruffin (S$6.5). It was barely flaky and was dense. The worst of it was the matcha ganache that barely flowed out upon being sliced open.
