Don’t go to Newton Food Centre or Lau Pa Sat for local food…
If you’re planning to try all the local food in one place, head down to StraitsKitchen at Grand Hyatt Singapore — a halal buffet with an extensive array of Singapore speciality dishes.
To sum up my experience here, it would be akin to dining in the fanciest hawker centre you can think of. You can literally find all the classic dishes here like laksa, chicken rice, otah, and more.
If you’re bringing your tourist friend on a food hunt, you’ll be able to find all the must-eat Singapore dishes here too.

What we recommend at StraitsKitchen
Eating chicken rice and laksa might be sacrilegious (so don’t come with your parents if you’re Asian), but boy was the local food here good.

Here’s a summary of what we recommend:
- Laksa
- Butter chicken
- Chicken rice
- Double-boiled soup
- Keropok
- Satay
- Durian ice cream
- Orh nee
- Popiah

Not only was the Hainanese chicken here tender, it was really flavourful as well.
The butter chicken at the Indian station is a must-try as well. It was extra creamy and buttery, and apparently, it was so popular that they continued selling frozen butter chicken by the kilogram during the COVID lockdown.

Wash it all down with a freshly-made cup of teh tarik. This was extra milky and creamy, possibly from the extra portion of evaporated milk.
