Sunday Morning Coffee Shop – Japanese cafe near checkpoint

Purin (Japanese pudding) at Sunday Morning Coffee Shop JB Cafe

Good vibes, Instagrammable aesthetics, you have to check out Sunday Morning Coffee Shop while you’re in JB.

Conveniently located near JB Sentral checkpoint, this cafe offers Japanese drip coffee and mains. It also doubles up as a

But, with so many cafes near the checkpoint, why is Sunday Morning cafe arguably the best one there?

What we recommend at Sunday Morning Coffee Shop

We’ve tried practically half the menu here, and this is what we recommend ordering at Sunday Morning.

  • Iced Black Coffee (RM 11, $3.2)
  • Purin (RM 12, $3.5)
  • Banana Cinnamon (RM 12, $3.5)
  • Mentaiko Udon (RM 26, $7.6)

When ordering their coffee, in addition to choosing between their house blend or single origin (on rotation), you will also have to choose between cold drip and hand drip.

Hot Japanese drip coffee in JB

What’s the difference between cold and hand drip?

Cold dripping is essentially a cold brew, where cold water is percolated through ground coffee, extracting all the natural tasting notes and aromas without any astringency. Meanwhile, hand drip is your regular filter coffee. But instead of a gooseneck kettle, the staff uses a traditional kettle with a wider spout, a commonly used equipment by the Japanese.

I’ve tried the iced version of both, and quite frankly, the difference is minimal unless you’re trying them both side by side. The hand drip is slightly more acidic, but that’s all there is to it.

Of course, if you don’t like your coffee black (and your bed at three), Sunday Morning Coffee Shop also offers Iced Latte (RM 12) and Iced Oat Latte (RM 14).

Food at Sunday Morning Coffee Shop

Personally, my JB trips are pretty standard. I’ll get coffee from Sunday Morning, and lunch from elsewhere — usually Restoran Hua Mui — for a larger portion at a more affordable price (I’m thrifty).

But, on the rare days I choose to treat myself, here are the dishes I recommend getting.

Mentaiko Udon review at Sunday Morning Coffee Shop
Mentaiko Udon (RM 26)

The Mentaiko Udon (RM 26) is a must. The udon has a nice bouncy texture, but more importantly, the flavours were so umami. I found myself slurping the entire plate down in minutes…

The Japanese Curry Rice (RM 20) is also really popular. I thought it was great. Not as addictive as the Mentaiko Udon, but I did appreciate how it came in a bigger portion.

Banana Cinnamon Toast review at Sunday Morning cafe
Banana Cinnamon (RM 12)

Meanwhile, for sweets, the Banana Cinnamon (RM 12) stole my heart with the fluffiest shokupan, which was nicely grilled. It’s a little charred, a little crispy — the perfect toasted texture in my opinion. The warmth of the toast was nicely contrasted with the ice cream. With an additional topping of butterscotch and cinnamon, the dish ended up with a warm and comforting profile.

Puring Japanese Pudding review
Just take a look at that texture!

Lastly, for desserts, opt for the Purin (RM 12), which is a Japanese-style pudding. I was so surprised at how rich and fragrant this was. Given the affordable price, I fully expected this to taste flat and saccharine. However, Sunday Morning did not skim on the ingredients, using a generous amount of vanilla pod to perfume the pudding. The texture was also godsend.
