The Great Banoffee at The Affogato Bar - Biscoff gelato, banana cake, chocolate feuillitine, double shot Empire espresso

You can tell a lot about a person by their coffee order. Black coffee is for purists who like to keep things simple. Latte is the go-to for people pleasers who will go out of their way to help others. Lastly, a blended coffee drink is perfect for imaginative trendsetters.

What about affogato?

Affogato is an Italian dessert consisting of vanilla ice cream topped with a shot of espresso coffee, and The Affogato Bar has proven that there is more than one way of enjoying this dish.

Located at Cluny Court, Botanic Gardens, The Affogato Bar is Asia’s first standalone affogato cafe.

The Banira Uji-cha ($14) completely deviates from tradition. This Japanese-inspired affogato is layered with matcha cake, azuki red beans, matcha streusels and Madagascan vanilla bean gelato. A shot of concentrated Uji matcha from Craft Tea Fox is served on the side.

Uji, a city in Japan, is the birthplace of matcha. Its astringency, while pleasant on its own, could not anchor the sweet elements of the dish. While we found the flavours one-dimensional, people with a sweet tooth would likely enjoy this.

On the other hand, The Great Banoffee ($13) demonstrated more restraint. While it comprises decadent caramel biscuits gelato, banana cake, chocolate feuilletine and banana jam, the double shot of espresso provided a striking contrast of flavours.

Without warning, the bitterness of the espresso strikes, paving the way for the other flavours. The caramel gelato waltzed in, while the fragrance of bananas followed suit.

More than affogatos

Aside from affogatos, the cafe also serves hand-rolled bagels, focaccia sandwiches and waffles. Waffles are only available after 4pm from Friday to Tuesday.
