Freetime Studio review – Sanrio decoden workshop in Singapore

Sanrio charms for decoden workshop

Are you a fan of Cinnamoroll, Kuromi or My Melody? Instead of buying Sanrio household products, how about making one yourself?

If you’re looking for something fun and interesting to do in Singapore, check out this hidden decoden workshop in Tai Seng, with affordable prices from $30 for a 1.5 hour session.

You can decorate Sanrio characters and pipe decoden on several household items like phone stands, mirrors, storage boxes, toy lamps and many more.

Decoden workshop — fun or not?

Whether or not you might enjoy a decoden workshop would really depend on whether you like crafts. Personally, we had tons of fun picking out charms and decorating our household accessories, as well as talk about our favourite Sanrio characters from when we were kids.

While this may initially seem like a workshop for kids (because of all the Sanrio figurines), I assure you that this session intrigued me and my friends even though we were all full-grown adults.

Also, most of the products are quite practical for everyday usage such as jewellery boxes or mirrors. So I’d say it’s quite worth the money especially if you love Sanrio characters. They also have Disney and Popmart.

For those who might be unfamiliar, decoden is a Japanese style of decorating accessories. It’s derived from the words “decorate” and “den”, which is “phone” in Japanese. However, what started out as a phone case decorating experience has expanded into many other household items.

What is included in the Freetime Studio’s workshop?

The workshop ranges from $30 to $60 as a base price for a 1.5 hour session.

The price depends on which product you choose. Generally, the smaller items like a Phone Stand or Toy Lamp are $30, while an Oil Lamp is the most expensive at $60.

In addition to the household item of your choice, the base price also includes one big figurine, unlimited charms and beads, and unlimited decoden for piping.

You can also pay a bit more for an additional Sanrio figurines, or some of their special charms and beads. But personally, I thought that the free ones already looked super adorable and there were so many of them; you’ll definitely be able to find tons that suit your aesthetic.

What is the workshop process like?

You can either book a specific workshop online in advance, or if you can’t make up your mind, pick the Come and Decide ($25), where you go to Freetime Studio, take a look at all their products, and decide.

Decoden workshop assembly time
Collected everything we need. Now it’s time for the assembly

Once you’re there, the steps are as follows:

  1. Choose the product that you would like to decorate
  2. Take a mini basket and pick out your figurines, charms and beads
  3. Choose your decoden colours and start piping
  4. Stick on the figurines and charms while the decoden is semi-dried
  5. Collect your masterpiece after 3 days

You can explore your creativity and freely design on your product with the materials and tools provided.

The decoden piping is quite similar to piping cream on a cake or cupcake. I found it really easy because I’m also a baker for many years. But even my friends, who do not have any artistic or baking experience, picked it up in no time. Freetime Studio’s staff were also really friendly and welcoming when they taught us how to pipe.
